WATCH: Joshua Little grabs hattrick against New Zealand at the T20 World Cup 2022
Irish pacer Joshua Little grabbed a hat-trick against New Zealand at the ongoing T20 World Cup on Friday (November 4) in Adelaide. It was the second hat-trick of this edition after UAE spinner Karthik Meiyappan took the first one against Sri Lanka during round one.
Little initially dismissed New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson, who was looking dangerous. On the next delivery, he found Jimmy Neesham off guard in front of wickets before sending Mitchell Santner for a golden duck. Although both Neesham and Satner tried to overturn the decision with the help of DRS, the original decision stood.
Little’s teammates and fans in the stadium started chanting and celebrating following the hattrick. He became the sixth bowler to take a hattrick in a T20 World Cup match and second from Ireland. The first was Curtis Campher, who took a hat-trick against the Netherlands in the previous edition at UAE.
Joshua Little efforts goes into vain
Despite Joshua Little’s brilliant efforts with the ball, New Zealand posted a mammoth total of 185 against Ireland. In reply, Ireland could only score 150, losing the match by 35 runs. Kane Williamson, who was going through a rough patch, scored 61 off just 35 balls and was adjudged the player of the match.
“I was just trying to build some partnerships and contribute, happy to time a few balls as well today but it was a real team effort. I wanted to take my options, work on partnerships, speak with the batters about things to do going forward,” Williamson said at the post-match presentation.
This win takes the Kiwis to the no.1 spot in the table and helps them book their semis berth. The real battle now lies between England and Australia from group 1. If both manage to win their last group stage match, NRR (Net Run Rate) will come into play. Currently, the Lions are superior in that aspect than the Baggy Greens.
