Who is Rachin Ravindra? Meet New Zealand cricketer named after Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar
Rachin Ravindra
One name that caught everyone’s special attention during the first Twenty20 International (T20I) between India and New Zealand, was Rachin Ravindra. The 22-year-old young cricketer, who comes from an Indian origin just like many other Kiwi players including Ish Sodhi, Jeetan Patel, Jeet Raval etc.
Batting at number six, Ravindra didn’t get much game time in the middle as he was out bowled by speedster Mohammed Siraj for just seven runs from eight deliveries. However, his presence on the ground was enough to make the Indian fans search for him on the net.
Born in Wellington, New Zealand, Rachin Ravindra is a spin-bowling all-rounder, who has played six 20-over matches for his country. He has just 54 runs at an average of 9, with the highest score of 20 runs. In bowling, he has picked six wickets with a decent economy rate of less than 5.
The back story of Rachin Ravindra
Ravi Krishnamurthy, who is the father of Rachin and the founder of Hutt Hawks Club, had moved to New Zealand from Bengaluru back in the 1990s. He is also an ardent admirer of the game of cricket and has played the sport in his hometown in India.
Interestingly, Rachin’s uncommon name was also a result of his father’s love for cricket. Ravi had combined the initials of India’s two of the most successful batters of all time, Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar.
Speaking of his son, Rachin’s career began at a young age where he represented New Zealand in the 2016 Under-19 World Cup as well as the 2018 Under-19 Cricket World Cup. The southpaw made his international debut in the senior men’s team against Bangladesh in the series earlier this year in September.
“I’ve trained, played at RDT (Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh) every year in the last four years during our winter,” Rachin’s father had told Telangana Today.
