“Why would you want to retain AB de Villiers if he is not scoring runs” – Brian Lara feels RCB must release ABD ahead of IPL 2022

“Why would you want to retain AB de Villiers if he is not scoring runs” – Brian Lara feels RCB must release ABD ahead of IPL 2022

Former West Indies skipper Brian Lara has named his three picks for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) to retain ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 mega auction.

According to him, the Bangalore-based franchise must keep hold of the trio of Devdutt Padikkal, Virat Kohli and Glenn Maxwell. Surprisingly, he missed out on two of the greatest players in the history of RCB – AB de Villiers and Yuzvendra Chahal.

“Virat Kohli is a franchise winner anywhere he goes. Virat Kohli is going to be retained in that position.

“Who else would I go for? You have to go for people that you actually feel if put them on the market you can get those back. I would go with Glenn Maxwell as the second choice as someone who I will retain, and also maybe a player like Padikkal,” Brian Lara said in a chat with cricket.com.

“RCB have got to make some tough decisions” – Lara

The road for the Virat Kohli-led side came to an end with a defeat against KKR in the eliminator of the IPL 2021. Meanwhile, the form of AB de Villiers, who is in the twilight of his professional career, turned out to be a major concern for the Challengers.

When asked why he would not retain a match-winner like ABD, Lara replied:

“Why would you want to retain AB de Villiers if he is not scoring runs and not getting any younger,” he stated.

The veteran cricketer concluded the interaction by saying that the RCB team management will have to make some tough calls before the start of IPL 2022.

“I think they (RCB) have got to make some tough decisions. Of course, Maxwell has come in, and listening to what their coaches have to say about him, he pretty much delivered what was expected of him,” Brian Lara said.
