Even though Pakistan’s chances of qualifying for the semifinals of the 2023 ODI World Cup were hanging by a thread, the Pakistani supporters, including team skipper Babar Azam, kept their hopes alive throughout Pakistan’s last group stage match against England. But England’s defeating Babar Azam and Co. by 93 runs at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata meant the Men in Green finally got knocked out of the quadrennial tournament.

Pakistan had to win the match by a huge margin of 287 runs if they batted first. With English skipper Jos Buttler choosing to bat first, Pakistan wanted nothing but a miracle, which no one saw.

England posted 337/9 in 50 overs, courtesy of Ben Stokes, Joe Root, and Jonny Bairstow‘s fifties. Pakistan started their run chase on a poor note but after steadying their ship for a while, they went on to lose wickets at regular intervals. But, alas! There was no “Qudrat Ka Nizam” or “system of nature” for Babar Azam and his men in this World Cup.

Pakistan had a decent start to their World Cup with a thumping win over the Netherlands, and after defeating Sri Lanka, they could not get back to winning ways, losing four consecutive matches. But they defeated Bangladesh and, with DLS’s help, beat New Zealand as well, before losing their last World Cup match against the Englishmen.
