Things really went haywire for Argentina following their defeat at the hands of Colombia in yesterday’s World Cup qualifier. Despite restoring parity through Nicolas Gonzalez in the 48th minute after Argentina fell behind, a 60th-minute spot-kick from James Rodriguez sealed the deal for Colombia. The defeat was ensued by a disappointing reaction from Emi Martinez, a spicy post-match presser from Lionel Scaloni and a bit of badge-rubbing to remind the Colombian fans of a certain silverware from Cristian Romero.

Cristian Romero was visibly not pleased with how the Colombian fans made the catcalls for the Argentine players after their defeat. This victory for Colombia also served as a more exhilarating moment for them considering the fact that they were able to avenge their earlier drubbing in the Copa America final against the similar foe.

After the match while the catcalls got louder from the Colombian fans, Romero took a stern long look at them and then rubbed on the Copa America badge on his chest. This gesture was a gentle reminder to the opposition fans that Argentina are still the proud winners of the continental battle for glory while it was the same team at the expense of whom La Albiceleste clinched the hallowed silverware.

Despite the defeat in the all-important clash against Colombia, Argentina still continues to be in the pole position of the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers. Colombia who is still undefeated is second in the list while Brazil has been ailing in the fifth position with 10 points from eight matches. In this round-robin format, the top six teams will be qualifying for the 2026 World Cup Final round.

Rodrigo de Paul was not happy with the Colombian fans mocking Argentina’s national athem

The defeat led to the paroxysm of emotions from both sides’ players. Rodrigo de Paul also opened up on the exact scenes that followed suit where he was vocal about the fact that Argentina has been such a great side in the recent past that even a solitary defeat gives the world immense relief. Also, he was very unhappy with the Colombian fans booing their national anthem.

This is part of the game: you win and you lose. In the last five years we have lost three games, today it was our turn to lose. The schedule was particular, but we have to get used to it. We are in a place where everyone wants to beat us, it’s normal...We accept defeat and move on. It wasn’t right for them to boo our anthem, but I understand their pain. They were excited about the Copa América too.
Rodrigo de Paul said in the post-match presser after Argentina’s defeat against Colombia

With a month of gap between the next international fixture, the players will be returning to their respective clubs. Argentina’s next assignment will be against Venezuela on 11th of October while in less than five days’ time from that game they will be up against Bolivia.
