Cristiano Ronaldo may have endured what has been one of the most heartbreaking and frustrating nights in his entire career. The Al-Nassr captain, despite his best efforts, was forced to accept the runners-up medal as Al-Hilal completed the domestic double over them, both in the Saudi Pro League as well as the King’s Cup.

The Al-Nassr No.7 failed to convert his chances in the final and had to accept painful defeat as the opposition came out on top after penalties. After clawing their way back into the game in the closing minutes, extremely poor penalties and a monumental display from Al-Hilal keeper Yassine Bounou ensured that the trophy went to the men in blue.

As Ronaldo and his teammates made their way to the pitch after collecting their runners-up medals, the crowd chanted the name of the Portuguese’s arch rival Lionel Messi. ‘Messi, Messi‘ sang the crowd in unison as the No.7 made his way to the pitch with his head held down.

The result on Friday night means that Al-Nassr will go the 2023/24 season without claiming a single trophy.

Yassine Bounou’s heroics sink Al-Nassr in the King’s Cup final

Al-Nassr had their final chance to salvage their season with a trophy as they took on Al-Hilal in the final of the King’s Cup. The final of Saudi Arabia’s Premier competition unfolded in the most dramatic of ways, as either side shared numerous chances throughout the 120 minutes. Aleksandar Mitrovic headed his side into the lead with just 7 minutes on the clock.

His goal gave Al-Hilal the leverage they needed to bring the game into their control, which they did so commendably for the majority of the game. Cristiano Ronaldo‘s unbelievable attempt for an overhead strike hit the upright while the League top scorer‘s 1v1 with Bounou was saved by the Moroccan.

Sadio Mane‘s missed chance at the start and many other ‘easy’ chances came back to haunt them when David Ospina saw red for handling the ball outside his area.

However, the Faris Najd were given a way back into the game when Ali Albulayhi picked up a red card for ‘headbutting’ his opponent in the face. Moments later, Al-Nassr equalized from a throw-in, headed in by Ayman Ahmed. The penalty shootout that followed saw the men in blue come out victorious by a margin of 5-4.
