Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo was in a flood of tears after missing a penalty against Slovenia, in the Round of 16 at the Euros. The 39-year-old broke down further, after seeing his 69-year-old mother crying in the stands.

The Al-Nassr forward has endured a difficult European campaign failing to score a single goal in the knock-out stages. Ronaldo was given the opportunity to put his side in front in the first half of extra time after a goalless stalemate in normal time. However, to the utter surprise of fans, the Portuguese skipper failed to convert the penalty owing to a brilliant save by Slovenian shot-stopper, Jan Oblak.

Despite initially remaining unfazed, the Portuguese later crumbled into tears at the end of the first half of extra time. This emotional outburst reportedly stemmed from seeing his mother, Dolores Aveiro, visibly upset in the stands following his missed penalty. It is evident from the videos that her reaction triggered the forward’s on-field breakdown during the coach’s half-time pep talk. The ex-Los Blancos star had to be consoled by his team-mates following his emotional outburst.
