Contrary to what has been the case for Portugal, Cristiano Ronaldo needed his teammates to ‘bail him out’ from a treacherous situation. The 39-year-old let a golden chance to hand Portugal the win slip through his fingers when he failed to convert a penalty kick in the 105th minute against Slovenia. Portugal would’ve been a goal to the good had their talisman found the net from 12 yards.

After an emotional sequence in which the 39-year-old needed consoling, he was back to business as usual for his country. Despite taking the penalty late into a shootout throughout his career, Ronaldo was the first to step up against Slovenia. After a brief pause in his run up, the No.7 made no mistake to ensure that his shot eluded Jan Oblak‘s reach.

‘Wasteful’ Cristiano Ronaldo yet to score at 2024 Euros

Not many would have guessed Cristiano Ronaldo to go goalless in his first four games at the 2024 Euros. The 39-year-old owns the record for most goals scored in the history of the competition with 14! However, his immaculate record did not come to save him in 2024 as the player is yet to open his account in Germany.

Despite being one of the best free-kick takers in the game, the No.7 has missed a handful of spot kicks for Portugal at the Euros. Ronaldo ended up failing to convert all four of the free kicks he took against Slovenia, even though two of them required saving. His record in major international tournaments for the same is 58-1 (attempted – scored).

His ‘worst’ moment of the game came in extra time, when Jan Oblak saved a crucial penalty which would’ve put his side in front. Ronaldo was reduced to tears after the same, with trolls and abuse pouring in from all sides. Many called for the player to retire after his abysmal display against Slovenia. However, fans are hopeful that the player will redeem himself against France in the quarter finals.
