It was a heartbreaking finish for Portugal as they crashed out of Euro 2024 after a defeat at the hands of France in the tie-breaker. Both the sides failed to score in the 120 minutes of action and as the game rolled to the penalties, Joao Felix‘s missed spot-kick eliminated Portugal.

Alongside the end of Portugal, Cristiano Ronaldo‘s exit from the fray also left the fans saddened. The Portuguese captain who failed to score a single goal in the tournament, including the missed penalty against Slovenia, took to his Instagram and thanked the fans heartily for their unwavering support.

We wanted more. We deserved more. For us. For each one of you. For Portugal. We are grateful for everything you have given us and for everything we have achieved so far. On and off the field, I am sure that this legacy will be honored and will continue to be built. Together.

Ronaldo had a tough outing in the tournament after failing to score on multiple occasions despite coming pretty close. He had the best chance of the tournament against Slovenia when Portugal was awarded a spot-kick. Sadly enough for the skipper, he failed to flip that in. There was a major hue and cry to replace Ronaldo with the likes of Diogo Jota or Goncalo Ramos in order to provide a bit more balance in their attacking unit.

How did Euro 2024 fan out for Portugal?

Portugal started their group stage in Euro 2024 with a 2-1 win over Czechia. They bolstered their vise on the table top with another convincing victory against Turkiye which saw them firing three goals past the latter. In a shocking outing in their last group-stage fixture they were routed by underdogs, Georgia.

Things didn’t look better for Ronaldo and his men when Portugal locked horns against Slovenia in the Round of 16. Despite being technically overwhelmed, the Slovenian defence kept their shape and eventually fended off Portugal to force a tie-breaker. It was the penalties that helped the latter to sail through.

In the quarter-final, however, they were up against one of the finest units in the tournament and with a defence like that of France, it was simply a mountain ahead of them that they had to scale. Eventually it was the penalties that decided the fate of the game with France finding themselves in the semis. With Ronaldo’s Instagram post, it is kind of difficult to figure out whether he still wants to continue playing for the 2026 World Cup and even if he does, Roberto Martinez may just have other plans.
