Cristiano Ronaldo and Al-Nassr crashed out of the Saudi Super Cup on Monday night as rivals Al-Hilal once again came out on top against the Faris Najd. The semi-final that unfolded at the Mohammed Bin Zayed Stadium saw Al-Hilal put two past Al-Nassr as push came to shove and star man Ronaldo saw red. Eventful to say the least, Ronaldo’s sending off was undoubtedly the highlight of the match.

Al-Hilal effortlessly went ahead in the second-half as goals from skipper Salem Aldawsari and Malcom sealed the deal for the hosts. Despite a late goal from Sadio Mane, ten-man Al-Nassr couldn’t muster a second to get back into the game. Ronaldo, despite his 35 goals and 12 assists, is forced to accept the possibility that his side will not lift silverware this season.

However, a regrettable moment came to light in the 86th minute, when an enraged Ronaldo appeared to ‘elbow’ Al-Hilal defender Ali Albulayhi near the touchline. Cameras captured the incident, in which the No.7 aggressively elbowed his opponent as he made an attempt to slow down an Al-Nassr throw-in.

The match official wasted no time in sending off Ronaldo, and despite initial disbelief, made his way to the tunnel.

Al-Nassr got the better of their opponents in one of the most heated clashes in Saudi this season. While Cristiano Ronaldo saw red, fans went berserk on social media. While many defended the player’s reaction, others showed no mercy to the Al-Nassr captain. His red card initiated a chain of reactions on social media, with one fan even calling for the player to be banned following his action.

Another said that kickboxing one’s opponent isn’t what football is about. Some mocked Ronaldo’s supporters, claiming that they will soon blame the referee for being against Ronaldo.

Others blamed his attitude, calling it a disgraceful and shameless incident. Some however, blamed the Al-Hilal defender for exaggerating contract and flying to the ground.

Many comments compared Ronaldo’s elbow to that of UFC while some said that a person who shows such behavior can never be the face of the sport. Following the painful defeat in the Saudi Super Cup and a gap of 12 points in the League, it remains to be seen what Ronaldo and co. can muster to salvage their season.
