Cristiano Ronaldo suffered one of the most frustrating nights in his illustrious career as Portugal scraped their way past Slovenia. Portugal’s 39-year-old No.7 was tasked with handing his side a late lead in extra time. However, contrary to what was expected, Ronaldo’s 105th minute penalty was saved by Jan Oblak! To make things worse, fans were witness to heartbreaking visuals of their favorite player in tears after missing the penalty.
Portugal survived an almighty scare to their run at the 2024 Euros on Monday night. After a poor display against Georgia, Ronaldo and his men were held to a goalless draw over 120 minutes, even though heroics from Diogo Costa saw them through. Despite the happy ending, Portugal’s prolific captain was inconsolable after missing the crucial penalty. Oblak expertly dove to his right and kept out what would’ve been the match-winner for Portugal.

Ronaldo was immediately surrounded by his teammates in an effort to console the player. To the surprise of many, Ronaldo broke down in tears despite there being another 15 minutes of extra time to go.
Pictures of Diogo Dalot consoling his captain have gone viral on social media. Fans worldwide sympathized with the player and reassured their love for him on the web.
Diogo Costa’s heroics help Portugal qualify for the quarter finals in dramatic fashion
Portugal will take on tournament favorites France in the quarter finals of the 2024 Euros. The men in red were on the brink of elimination against a 57th ranked Slovenian side as the two went up against each other at Deutsche Bank Park. Portugal have their goalkeeper Diogo Costa to thank for their spot in the quarter finals.

Normal time saw either side have a go at it, with both Oblak and Costa not having much to do in regulation time. However, extra time followed during which Oblak magically kept out a penalty from Cristiano Ronaldo himself. It is important to note that Slovenia spurned a couple of golden chances to take the lead themselves. Despite not having much to do from open player, Costa took centre stage when it came to penalties.
The 24-year-old became an instant hero as he saved every single penalty taken in the shootout. The FC Porto goalkeeper kept out shots from Josip Ilicic, Jure Balkovec and Benjamin Verbic. Costa was also praised for his marvelous save against Benjamin Sesko who was through on goal after a costly slip up from Pepe in defense. His exquisite save kept Portugal in the running and eventually steered them to victory on penalties.
