Alexander Zverev kick-started his Canadian Open campaign with a victory over Australia’s Adam Walton with a 7-6(6), 6-4 scoreline. One of the highlights from the match, however, left many in splits. During that match, Zverev celebrated a serve he thought was an ace.
This happened in the tie-break of the first set. Zverev needed only a point to win the set. He served and roared, thinking that it was an ace.
But the crowd erupted in laughter when seconds later, the chair umpire made him realize that the ball was out. Zverev went on to win the point after he hit a forehand winner to end the rally.

With this win, Zverev took a 1-0 lead in the head-to-head matchups. He will next be locking horns with 32nd seed Matteo Arnaldi, whom he has faced only once. They locked horns in Acapulco this year, which Zverev won in three sets. Before setting up the clash with Sascha, the Italian ace knocked out Tristan Schoolkate.
The 28-year-old is chasing his second Canadian Open of his career. Back in 2017, he defeated 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer in straight sets to win the title.
The German ace has won just one title this season- the Boss Open, by beating Ben Shelton. Apart from Munich, Zverev also played the finals of the Australian Open and the Stuttgart Open, but he failed to beat Jannik Sinner and Taylor Fritz, respectively.
The Canadian Open is Zverev’s first tournament since his Wimbledon defeat. The three-time Grand Slam finalist crashed out of the grass-court Major with a five-set defeat to Arthur Rinderknech in the first round. He hasn’t yet clinched a Big Title since his victory at the Paris Masters last year.
Alexander Zverev’s feelings on the US Open’s new mixed doubles format
The US Open has completely revamped its mixed doubles format and received mixed reactions from the tennis community. Several double and mixed doubles players have criticized it, while singles players seized the opportunity to form teams and sign up for it.

Alexander Zverev, too, will be playing, alongside Belinda Bencic. In the pre-tournament press conference in Toronto, Zverev suggested that the event will be hit because of the top singles players.
No, I think it’s a fun event that they’re trying out. I’m not the only one. I think a lot of singles players are playing it, and it’s going to be interesting to see what the event will look like. But then what the fan interest will look like as well.
Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner have joined forces with Emma Raducanu and Emma Navarro, respectively. Grigor Dimitrov had “begged” Aryna Sabalenka to be his partner, but the Bulgarian ace suffered a pectoral injury during Wimbledon and has decided to withdraw from the US Open.
So it’s uncertain who will be Sabalenka’s partner or whether she will pull out of the event. Iga Swiatek will be playing with Casper Ruud, but Coco Gauff is not competing.
But I’m sure if you know Carlos Alcaraz or Sabalenka, Sinner or Coco Gauff steps on the court, the fan interest will always be there. So it’s going to be fun to be a part of it, and we’ll see how it goes.
Alexander Zverev added
Zverev has never played mixed doubles in Grand Slam events. But only once he played in the doubles category- at the 2016 French Open.
In singles at the US Open, Zverev came close to winning the title in 2020 as he had reached the championship clash and won the first two sets. But he ended up squandering the lead and eventually lost the match to Dominic Thiem.
