Chennai Super Kings have sent a suggestion to the BCCI that they want to retain MS Dhoni as an uncapped player in IPL 2025. The franchises had a meeting with IPL governing council on Wednesday and CSK brought the suggestion in that meeting.

This is a rule which existed in the IPL from 2008-2021. It states that if a player has retired from international cricket for more than 5 years, then he can be classified as an uncapped player.

CSK still want to keep Dhoni, who is now 43, as they know the brand value that the Ranchi man possesses. Till Dhoni is there, he will attract a lot of lucrative deals and also fan following for CSK. So, CSK will do all that Dhoni remains a part of the franchise.

MS Dhoni was struggling with injury during IPL 2024

Dhoni did roll back the years in IPL 2024 by playing a few good cameos at the back end of the innings. However, he was seen struggling with knee injury throughout the tournament. He stepped down from CSK captaincy at the start of the season and handed it over to Ruturaj Gaikwad.

Everyone felt that he will not continue in IPL 2025 and the 2024 season was going to be his last in the IPL. However, Dhoni has still not broken silence on his future in IPL. In 2023, Dhoni led CSK to their 5th IPL title. Dhoni has revealed that he will wait till the rules of IPL 2025 gets formalized.

There is a lot of time for it. We have to see what decision they take on player retention etc. Right now, the ball is not in our court. So, once the rules and regulations get formalized, I will take a call, but needs to be in the best interest of the team.

Wherever Dhoni goes, the whole stadium gets filled with yellow jerseys. It needs to be seen whether the IPL governing council does bring back the rule.
