Manhattan did not expect an evening like Tuesday’s when 27-year-old Shane Tamura waltzed into 345 Park Avenue and sprayed bullets at anyone that he could shoot at. The incident took place at the NFL headquarters, where Roger Goodell and league staff were housed.

The shooter used his M4 rifle to kill 4 people, including NYPD officer Didarul Islam, while seriously injuring a fifth person. He had fired off several other shots, but thankfully, most of them did not hit people.

After opening fire in the lobby, Tamura took the elevator to the 33rd floor, where Rudin Management’s Offices were located. There, he fired off a few shots and ultimately took his own life by firing into his chest.

Investigators were looking at links to a man who was a security officer in one of the casinos in Las Vegas, Nevada, to Rudin Management. However, New York City Mayor Eric Adams revealed that Tamura’s primary target was the NFL.

He did have a note on him. The note alluded to that he felt he had CTE. He appeared to blame the NFL for his injury. From our preliminary investigation, he took the wrong elevator bank up to the NFL Headquarters. Instead, it took him to Rudin Management.

NYC Mayor Eric Adams said on CBS Mornings

The Mayor’s words indicate that Shane Tamura was indeed targeting Roger Goodell and those who work at the NFL headquarters. He could not get to the league office since he took the wrong lift up the tower. However, he did seriously injure one NFL employee.

Shane Tamura blamed the NFL for his CTE

The note Mayor Eric Adams was referring to was a three-page note that was recovered from Shane Tamura’s wallet. It contained references to CTE, and he believed he contracted the disease by playing football.

This could be the first violent stand against the NFL for its part in CTE. The league has long tried to distance itself from the disease, even though multiple studies have proven that NFL players, along with boxers, and those competing in highly volatile sports have contracted CTE.

Tamura played football in high school for Granada Hills Charter and Golden Valley. He was known to be a star running back and could also play other positions. But it seems mental health problems took over.

It also seems he had been planning this attack for a while, considering he had weapons in his possession that, by law, he could not have had. Moreover, he had additional ammunition stored in his car, which could indicate he had planned on making a stand against the NFL.

Roger Goodell sends an email to all NFL staff after the attack

Soon after Shane Tamura took his own life and law enforcement managed to contain the situation, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell emailed all NFL employees. The email first gave condolences to those who lost their lives.

Then, after giving gratitude to law enforcement and medical staff for handling the situation, he revealed that an NFL employee was impacted by this shooting. The unnamed employee was being looked after by family and NFL staff.

He then asked the remaining staff to work from home as the league would shut its offices for the remainder of the week. Since security would be tight over the upcoming days, he suggested meeting over video conference to communicate.

After all, this was the most violent stand against the NFL’s attempts to mask the impacts of CTE. Of late, players have been found to be joking about it. This incident could impact the league more than it would have liked.
