Biggest Controversy in the Curling game at Winter Olympics

Curling is one of the most controversial sports out there, which is set to be seen yet again at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, China. Over the years, many have even went on to discard curling as an ‘actual’ sport that keeps on taking place every then and now.
From the 2010 Paralympics doping incident to the Dump-Gate saga in Canada, the sport in which players slide stones on a sheet of ice toward a target area which is segmented into four concentric circles, has seen various infamous moments. One such occurrence took place at the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Kires between the match between Great Britain and Sweden.
It was a controversy that confused and divided opinion among viewers, and frustrated GB’s women’s team. Eventually, they ended up on the losing side in unusual circumstances to Sweden.
With the game in an extra end, Britain’s skipper Eve Muirhead was judged not to have let go before the hogline with her final stone, which meant it was void. The match ended 8-6 in favour of the Swedes.
“I have never seen that before”
This incident led to a lot of comments and reactions coming from all over the fraternity. “I have never seen that before, especially with the last stone in the last end,” said BBC Sport commentator Jackie Lockhart, who is a four-time Olympian too.
“All sports are progressing and we probably have to start looking at using video footage as well. That’s really disappointing. It’s not the way you want it to happen.”
Fellow BBC commentator Steve Cram added: “That leaves a bad taste in the mouth. It’s the rules I guess. That’s the one piece of technology in the game but why on earth could they not have taken another look at the replay?
“Because of that Great Britain lose the match – though it may have been one they would have lost anyway.”
