The Intercontinental Championship has historically been referred to as the worker’s belt. The past few years have witnessed a resurgence in its popularity, which seemed like a gone case during the Vince McMahon regime. Per WrestleVotes via Backstage Pass Q/A, WWE does have fascinating plans for the IC title at WrestleMania 41. A multi-man bout is in the works for the champ, Bron Breakker.
The report noted that it’s not expected to be a ladder match, but one could certainly expect WWE to pit Breakker against a number of opponents. Over the last few weeks, The Unpredictable Badass has had cold staredowns with the likes of AJ Styles, Finn Balor, and Penta, to name a few. Sheamus also comes to mind, but he’s already had his opportunity that he bottled up at Saturday Night’s Main Event.
Former AEW star Penta has only risen up the ranks since debuting on Raw last month. He hasn’t been pinned yet, and it appears like the Mexican grappler is being heated up for potentially his first title reign in the company. At the moment, he’s feuding with Ludwig Kaiser and Pete Dunne. Company veterans like Styles and Balor haven’t tasted singles gold in a while too.
They could pose a serious threat to Breakker’s ongoing IC title reign. No matter what, the men’s mid-card division of Raw is firing on all cylinders lately. Whatever combination of the yet-to-be-decided title defense WWE comes up with for Bron at WrestleMania 41 is likely going to bang.
The actual build to the eventual matchup shall be starting the Monday after the Elimination Chamber this weekend. The prestigious Intercontinental title was last defended on a PLE back in November at Survivor Series: WarGames. Breakker retained against Sheamus and Kaiser in a stellar three-way.
Who brought the prestige back to the Intercontinental Championship?
A man who single-handedly restored the sanctity to the IC title is none other than the reigning World Heavyweight Champion Gunther. In his 666-day reign, The Ring General proudly defended the strap twice at WrestleMania in consecutive editions.

In 2023, the Austrian scraped through Drew McIntyre and Sheamus in one of the most physical triple threat matchups one will ever see. Last year, it was finally time for the erstwhile Walter to drop the title to Sami Zayn. The story was built around Zayn being a prohibitive underdog who had no other option but to win.
Amidst a rollercoaster of emotions, the former Bloodline member overcame Gunther. The latter did lose on the given night but etched his name in the history books as arguably the greatest IC Champ of all time.
