Italian rider Elisa Longo Borghini won the second women’s Paris-Roubaix in style, after a break away and solo ride of nearly 30km. The Trek Segafredo rider made her move in a cobbled sector of the 124.7km course, chasing a breakaway group.
The two time world and Olympic bronze medallist went on to win the event over 23 seconds ahead of second place finisher Belgium’s Lotte Kopecky who was the winner of the recent Tour de Flanders. Borghini’s teammate, Netherland’s Lucinda Brand, finished third. “It’s an unbelievable feeling,” said Longo Borghini.

“I had been feeling unwell for a month and could not perform the way I wanted. But the team trusted me and told me I could do it,” said Borghini to bbc.com. However, not all things went well for the athletes. Italy’s Elisa Balsamo was disqualified for taking an illegal tow from the team car while she was chasing back after a puncture.
Unfortunately, last year’s runner-up Marianne Vos was ruled out of the race after testing positive for covid-19. Last year’s race was won by Britain’s Lizzie Deignan. This year she did not defend her title because she is expecting her second child.
