Four-time champion cyclist Mathieu Van der Poel arrested ahead of the 2022 World Championships

Dutch Cyclist Mathieu Van der Poel was arrested on Sunday in Sydney the night before the men’s 2022 World Championship Road race. The four-time champion who one of the favorites, was charged with allegedly assaulting two teenagers when the police reached his hotel.
According to what the rider told some media, the girls would not stop knocking at his door. “There was a small dispute. It was about noisy neighbours and they are quite strict here. I wasn’t back in my room until four o’clock (in the morning).” stated Van Der Poel
That’s certainly not ideal. It’s a disaster, but I can’t change anything anymore. I’m trying to make the best of it,” he added. “He was allegedly involved in a verbal altercation with two teenage girls – aged 13 and 14.” The police said.

“It’s further alleged the man then pushed both teenagers, with one falling to the ground and the other being pushed into a wall, causing a minor graze to her elbow.” reports said. The final event of the UCI Road World Cycling Championships that has been going on for the last one week took place on Sunday in Wollongong, Australia.
The 27-year-old began the race but had to pull out in the early stages and also pay a fine of US$1,000. Later released on bail, he will be appearing in the Sutherland court on Tuesday
Mathieu Van der Poel has had a decent year so far with titles at the Dwars Door Vlaanderen and Ronde Van Vlaanderen, and third and fourth place finishes at Milan-San Remo and Amstel Gold Race.
