In a surprising trade on Thursday, the Arizona Diamondbacks traded away Josh Naylor to the Seattle Mariners. This development came just 7 months after they acquired him from a trade with the Cleveland Guardians.

Naylor was one of the top performers for the Guardians in 2024. He crossed the 30-home run mark for the first time in his career last season and finished with 31 home runs and 108 RBI while hitting at a .243 average.

His performances earned him his first All-Star appearance last year and helped the Guardians win the division with a 92-69 record. The AL Central side would end up losing 4-1 in the American League Championship Series (ALCS) against the New York Yankees.

Naylor had one year remaining on his contract after the end of the 2024 season. The Mariners were one of the teams that were interested in bringing him to their team. The Guardians would eventually trade him to the Diamondbacks instead.

On Thursday, the Mariners were finally able to land him. The team gave up two of their top prospects LHP Brandyn Garcia and RHP Ashton Izzi, in exchange for the 1st baseman.

In the 93 games he played for the Diamondbacks this year, Naylor batted with a .292 average and had an OPS of .807. During this tenure in Arizona, he managed to hit 11 home runs and drive in 59 runs. One of his home runs was a walk-off grand slam against the Mariners in the 11th inning in June. This walk-off slam saw his former team beat his new team 8-4.

The Mariners have been on a charge in recent weeks. After taking 2 games against their division rivals, the Houston Astros, the team, as of Thursday, finds itself 5 games behind them. The addition of Naylor to a lineup that includes 2025 Home Run Derby Champion Cal Raleigh, Julio Rodriguez, and Randy Arozarena could give the team a huge spark in the offense in their push for the playoffs.

The trade of Naylor was one of the biggest trades of this season so far. This trade though might not be the only trade between the two teams.

One name that has dominated this trade topic is Eugenio Suarez. The 3rd baseman is having a fantastic year from the plate and only trails Cal Raleigh, Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani for the most home runs this season with 36.

As per insider Shannon Drayer, a reunion between him with the Mariners remains on the table. Suarez spanned the 2022 and 2023 seasons with the Mariners before joining the D-backs. The Cincinnati Reds and the New York Yankees are also teams that have been linked with a trade move of Suarez

As per Francys Romero, the D-backs are expected to trade around 5 or 6 players more. This could see them have a massive overhaul of their squad.
