If there was one thing everyone wanted to know from Dak Prescott—his contract situation. The Dallas Cowboys quarterback is in line for a massive extension, but at the same time, there’s also the possibility of entering free agency after the 2024 season.
Whenever anyone would ask about his contract, Prescott would carefully avoid it, saying he let his agent handle the money part. Thursday’s press brief from Oxnard was slightly different. The 30-year-old had to invoke his inner Marshawn Lynch to get through it without spilling many details.
His attempt wasn’t very successful, as he gave away a lot without revealing much.
I’m just here so I don’t get fined. [Honestly], I'm not into those talks anymore. They know that. I've told you guys once this thing kicks off, I'm gonna do what I can to control my game. My effort to help this team win [the Super Bowl].Dak Prescott told the reporters
As per recent reports, owner Jerry Jones chose to wrap up CeeDee Lamb’s contract ahead of Prescott because of the All-Pro receivers’ constant holdouts throughout the offseason and camp. Even though Prescott claimed he was not driven by the prospect of top money, he may end up playing elsewhere after this season.
I'm gonna say I want to be here [Dallas Cowboys]. But [you know]—you look up all the great quarterbacks I've watched [who] played for other teams. So, my point in saying that is, that's not something to fear. That may be a reality for me one day. May not be my decision.Dak Prescott quipped
#Cowboys QB Dak Prescott pauses briefly in the middle of his answer when talking about the business of the NFL:

Regardless, Prescott holds all the leverage because of the no-franchise tag and no-trade clause in his contract. He will have a cap hit of $55 million in 2024, and if the Cowboys don’t extend his contract before March 12, then they may have to either release him or pay him over $60 million annually.
Jerry Jones doesn’t believe Dak Prescott will leave the Dallas Cowboys anytime soon
The Cowboys’ pragmatic approach to giving their players new deals made matters worse. On top of that, they failed to keep their promise of adding new faces to strengthen the side. Later, Jones admired how great the side looked.
Now the pilot of the Cowboys’ slowly sinking ship suddenly showed some urgency. It could prove to be too little, too late, but Jones remains adamant Prescott’s future lies with the Cowboys.
I do not think that this will be his [Dak Prescott] last year with Cowboys at all. Am I being psychotic relative to my mirror? No. It's pretty clear, I think.Jerry Jones said
"In my life, there have been a lot of things I wanted but I couldn't get because I couldn't afford it. Have I learned to live with that in 80 something years, I have. And life does go on"

The Cowboys don’t seem to have the funds to pay both Prescott and Lamb. In the offseason, they refused to pay extra to Derrick Henry, who wanted to play for the Cowboys. Moreover, they will also have to deal with edge rusher Micah Parsons next year, although, like Prescott, he’s in no hurry.
