‘Honest’ Dak Prescott admits he hasn’t been good enough so far this season before vital 49ers game

Dak Prescott has reflected on his poor performance throughout the first quarter of the season and his now only focus is making improvements so that the Cowboys can qualify for playoffs—but first they must beat the 49ers.

Third time is usually the charm for most, but that hasn’t been the story for Dak Prescott in 2024. After consecutive 12-5 seasons, many believed the trajectory would not change, but after six weeks of football, the Cowboys sit third in the NFC East with three wins and three defeats.

As usual, Prescott has had to carry the lion’s share of the blame on his shoulders and rightfully so. The veteran quarterback has always been under the microscope for being the signal caller of the Cowboys, but after their humiliating 40-7 defeat against the Lions, the intensity of the criticism increased tenfold.

The Cowboys have seen a massive dip in their form compared to last season when they ranked in the top five in almost every offensive category. However, this year Mike McCarthy’s team is 20th in points per game (21.0), 12th in average yards per game (336.5), and they have dropped to 12th (42.2%) when it comes to scoring drives (touchdowns).

Fortunately for the 31-year-old, he had extra time on his hands to reflect upon his performances as the Cowboys were in their bye week.

I’d say I’ve played average, and average isn’t good enough right now by any means. It’s never been good enough for me. I can’t say that I’ve been happy or excited after any of these games that I’ve played. I can play better. For sure. And I expect to.

Prescott so far has thrown 1602 yards from 142 completions for eight touchdowns and six interceptions. He is closer to the Jaguars’ Trevor Lawrence in terms of numbers (2-5) than Lions’ Jared Goff, who is just ahead of him in overall quarterback standings this campaign.

Will history repeat itself for Dak Prescott?

The Cowboys will play the 49ers this weekend. Although the Niners are in a bind of their own, they can still prove to be a tough side to overcome, especially since last season’s drubbing is fresh in everyone’s mind.

Prescott can find solace in the fact that after the bye week last season, he led the Cowboys to an 8-3 record, eventually finishing on 12 wins. It has to be 9-2 this time though, which is a tough, but not impossible task.

On the other hand, McCarthy’s overall record after bye week is 12-5. As the coach of the Cowboys, at home, it’s 3-1, and on the road, it’s 2-1, as per Ed Werder. (HT/ESPN)

The Cowboys are on the road, but as per the bettors, the 49ers are the heavy favorites to bounce back from a bad loss against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 7.
