Rayne Dakota Prescott is now the highest-paid quarterback in NFL history. After months of speculation and negotiations with Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys, America’s team has budged and given him an extension that broke the record set by his previous contract.

Dak Prescott‘s new contract is for four years and will entitle him to $240 million, of which $231 million is guaranteed as per Adam Schefter of ESPN and Todd Archer, the quarterback’s agent. This means that 96% of Prescott’s new contract is in guarantees, a resounding show of faith in the quarterback by Jerry Jones. His new contract beats out Deshaun Watson’s deal which offered him $230 million fully guaranteed.

It was no surprise that Dak Prescott was set to secure a big deal. He is coming off an MVP-caliber year having thrown for 4,516 yards, 36 touchdowns, and had a QBR of 73.6. He led Dallas to the top of the NFC East and despite a slow start in the Wild Card matchup against the Green Bay Packers, eventually, Prescott came back and resurrected the offense.

There was no question about Dak Prescott getting paid. The two sides appeared to be at an impasse over the duration of his contract. While Dak wanted a deal for the long term, the Cowboys were tiptoeing initially. It seems Jones is now convinced that having Dak Prescott at quarterback gives America’s team its best shot to get back to the Super Bowl after nearly three decades.

Dak Prescott is set to make $60 million per year, a first in NFL history

In an offseason that witnessed minimal activity on the part of the Dallas Cowboys in terms of signing new players and making significant roster changes, the team’s focus appears to have been to retain its key players in CeeDee Lamb and Dak Prescott. After signing Lamb to a four-year contract for $160 million, Jerry Jones has made sure his quarterback can keep his focus on playing on an MVP level by securing his future in Dallas for an estimated AVV of $60 million.

With this extension, Dak Prescott will finish his career as the franchise leader in terms of passing yards, touchdowns, and other relevant measures for a quarterback. There is no denying the possibility that he may go on to finish his career in Dallas.

Prescott and his agent wanted to get a deal done before the start of the 2024-25 NFL season as they had all the leverage they required. They played their cards right and just hours before the Cowboys kick off their regular season against the Cleveland Browns, the uncertainty surrounding Dak Prescott’s future is over.
