The Cowboys will enter the 2025 season with Brian Schottenheimer as head coach, and Dak Prescott fully trusts he’s up to the task.

The Dallas Cowboys are in a unique situation. Jerry Jones decided the 2024 season wasn’t good enough for him to keep Mike McCarthy as the head coach. Dak Prescott was in rehab when the Cowboys appointed Brian Schottenheimer as the new head coach.

Schottenheimer’s training as a coach started back in 1997. He served as the quarterback coach and offensive coordinator at various clubs throughout the NFL, including the Seattle Seahawks, Los Angeles Chargers, and Washington Commanders.

The Cowboys is his first official head coaching gig, and unsurprisingly, analysts are skeptical whether the 51-year-old can handle the pressure of being the head honcho of ‘America’s Team.’

Dak Prescott has complete faith in Brian Schottenheimer’s leadership skills.

I’ve known Schotty [Brian Schottenheimer]. He’s been there the last three years—the first year being a consultant—and it’s not any monumental conversations that needed to happen, but his direction and the way he sees this offense going, the way he sees this team knowing, it’s clear throughout the team with the guys, with the men he’s hired as coaches, the way he’s got this whole building on the same page. Just excited for this chapter under him.

Schottenheimer’s first test would be to make good use of the draft. The Cowboys have 10 picks in this year’s edition in Green Bay. ESPN’s draft specialist Mel Kiper Jr. enlisted a running back, receiver, tackle, and guard as the Cowboys’ main priority in the draft.

From Kiper’s point of view, Schottenheimer and Jerry Jones would improve the running game to help Dak Prescott. The Cowboys cut both Rico Dowdle and Ezekiel Elliott after last season and added Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders.

Kiper projected the Cowboys selecting either Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty (if he’s still available at that point) or North Carolina’s Omarion Hampton.

Dak Prescott’s injury update

Schottenheimer’s biggest challenge would be to keep Prescott back to full fitness in week one. When reporters asked the Pro Bowler to provide an update on his injury, Prescott gave a positive answer.

If I had to play a game today, I definitely could do that. It’s about moving forward healthy to make sure I can play 17 times, 20 [games]… Whatever we get to when the time’s right.

The Cowboys kicked off their off-season training on April 7. Several videos began circulating on social media of Prescott going through catching drills, and one report suggested that he lost nearly 20 pounds since the Super Bowl in February.

I actually haven’t really lost any weight, weight’s just moved. [I am just] building my legs back up obviously from the hamstring. Might be leaner up top, but weight’s the same.

Prescott signed a four-year contract extension worth $240 million with the Cowboys only just a day before the 2024-25 season commenced. The contract also included $231 million in guaranteed money, an $80 million signing bonus, and an annual average salary of $61.1 million per year, making the 31-year-old the highest-paid player in NFL history.

Expectations were through the roof after the extension. The Cowboys got off to a hot start by defeating the Cleveland Browns on opening day, but lost the next two to the New Orleans Saints and the Baltimore Ravens. Prescott won two more in the next five before suffering a partial avulsion of his right hamstring.

Cooper Rush took over and won four more games as the Cowboys finished the season 7-10 to miss out on postseason football for the first time since 2019.

Jones didn’t waste time to replace Mike McCarthy with Brian Schottenheimer even though he wasn’t the Cowboys GM’s first choice.

Later, Rush left the team to sign with the Ravens, and Trey Lance agreed to play backup to Justin Herbert at the Los Angeles Chargers. The Cowboys traded for ex-Tennessee Volunteer Joe Milton from the New England Patriots to add some depth behind Prescott.
