George Pickens has already caught more touchdown passes in six games for the Cowboys then he ever did in a single season for the Steelers across the three years in Pittsburgh.

George Pickens‘ 168 yards and 1-touchdown performance against the Carolina Panthers did not surprise anybody. Pickens always possessed the talent. The only reason he no longer wears the black and gold of the Pittsburgh Steelers is that the AFC North franchise grew tired of his off-field antics.

So far, Pickens has kept his shenanigans to a minimum. He escaped with full marks even during the media’s best efforts to create a divide between him and CeeDee Lamb.

Pickens’s patience was tested during the first few weeks of the season. Quarterback Dak Prescott, of course, targeted Lamb more compared to the ex-Steeler. Astonishingly, Pickens kept his cool and masterfully complimented Lamb’s game.

This gave head coach Brian Schottenheimer the courage to hand the WR1 job to the 24-year-old ahead of the week four fixture after Lamb picked up a high ankle sprain. Pickens yards skyrocketed. From 8 catches, he racked up 134 yards and scored two touchdowns.

In the following two weeks, he caught a total of 11 catches from 15 targets for 226 yards and 2 touchdowns. This increased Pickens’ Cowboys’ tally to 32 receptions on 48 targets, 525 yards (16.4 yards per catch), and a career-high 6 total touchdowns. Jones said about Pickens:

He is doing more than we could’ve expected. What’s really special is he’s a real plus to have around the team.

Pickens only has eleven more games (excluding the playoffs unless the Cowboys qualify for it) in Dallas as his rookie contract comes to an end in the 2026 offseason. Keeping that in mind, the Cowboys will have a very small window to sign Pickens to a new contract.

He has already managed to earn Jones’ respect and now only needs the support of his teammates for a big payday. When reporters asked Prescott about Pickens’ extension, the MVP candidate revealed that he will have a private conversation with Jones at a later date.

George Pickens hints about staying with the Dallas Cowboys beyond the 2025 NFL season

Eyebrows were raised when the Cowboys traded away a 2026 third-round and a 2027 sixth-round draft pick to acquire Pickens and a 2027 sixth-round pick. Initially, it appeared that the Steelers had fleeced the Cowboys with their shrewd business.

Of course, the Steelers are 4-2 after, but none of their receivers have as many touchdowns or even receptions as Pickens. On the flip side, the Cowboys are 2-3-1 after suffering a shock loss against the Panthers last week.

It’s easy to cherry-pick stats from both ends, but what matters the most is how Pickens feels about his Cowboys tenure so far. Well, the good news is, he wants it to continue.

I wouldn’t mind it. The guys in the locker room are super cool, and the energy is great. I always want to showcase my talents.

When asked what’s more important to him as a football player, he zeroed in on winning games. He said:

Definitely winning. Just because that’s been my resume the whole time. I won in high school, I won at Georgia. Definitely winning, I always think about winning.

The Steelers drafted Pickens in 2022. He played 48 games across three seasons for the Steelers, racking up 174 catches, 2841 yards, and 12 touchdowns.
