The Cowboys haven’t appeared in a Super Bowl since 1995 and have fallen short in recent seasons despite having the league’s highest-paid quarterback, Dak Prescott.

The Dallas Cowboys started their preseason with a 31-21 defeat to the Los Angeles Rams at the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. The Cowboys and the Rams rested their starters and opted to give the backups a chance to show their skills and football acumen.

The Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott may not have suited up for the August 9 preseason matchup against the Rams, but that didn’t stop him from making headlines before kickoff. The veteran signal-caller, dressed in street clothes, spent much of the pregame catching up with familiar faces and exchanging a few words with opposing team members.

One exchange stood out in particular. While standing alongside Cowboys owner Jerry Jones on the sideline, Prescott crossed paths with Rams owner Stan Kroenke. The Cowboys quarterback approached Kroenke with a bold projection for the months ahead.

According to those nearby, Prescott told Kroenke, “We’ll meet y’all in the NFC Championship Game,” signaling his belief that Dallas is poised for a deep playoff run.

While the Dallas Cowboys remain the NFL’s most valuable franchise with being consistent playoff contenders, their postseason track record under Prescott has been underwhelming. Despite regular-season success, Dallas has consistently fallen short when the games matter most in January.

And the road ahead isn’t getting any easier. The NFC East is stacked, headlined by the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles, who have been the Cowboys’ biggest hurdle in recent years. Then there’s the surging Washington Commanders, led by second-year phenom quarterback Jayden Daniels. Daniels took Washington to the NFC Championship Game last season and ended their long drought of the conference finals.

In the case that they make it out at the top of their division, the Cowboys still face serious contention from at least two teams in the NFC West. The Rams also have a stellar offensive unit, and a rejuvenated San Francisco 49ers could mean trouble for the Cowboys easily.

Dak Prescott is at the center of the Dallas Cowboys’ future

The Dallas Cowboys quarterback is the most expensive athlete in the league, paid massively by the owner Jerry Jones. Prescott, however, hasn’t shown signs of excellence in the postseason. Although he has performed consistently and shown promise in the past, his last season was shadowed by a massive injury.

His performances ahead of the injury weren’t noteworthy either. Dan Orlovsky, a former Detroit Lions quarterback and ESPN analyst, recently shared an insight about the contract that messed up the Cowboys. Orlovsky compared the cap hits this season for two NFC East teams, the Eagles and the Cowboys.

Orlovsky noted that the combined cap hit of Jalen Hurts, AJ Brown, and DeVonta Smith is less than Prescott’s. The tweet, which is a direct snub at the owner Jones, amid the recent contract extension drama with Micah Parsons, had notes of a subtle nod to hint towards Prescott’s expected role.

The ceiling for quarterbacks is higher than for the other positions. The position takes up the biggest space for any team, especially when they are signed as the franchise leaders. The Philadelphia Eagles found theirs in Jalen Hurts, and once they were sure he was the guy, they wasted no time in securing his future. Hurts signed a five-year, $255 million extension, a massive deal at the time, though the quarterback market has since climbed even higher.

For 2025, Hurts carries a cap hit of $21.8 million, a significant number, but still well below the $50 million-per-year threshold many top passers now command. Even by 2028, he won’t hit that mark, giving the Eagles flexibility to keep talent around him.

The same cannot be said of Prescott’s deal. As he enters a new season with a bold confidence, much is expected of Dak Prescott.
