Even at 32 years old and with nearly a decade of NFL experience, Dak Prescott is determined to play well into his 40s. The Dallas Cowboys quarterback is inspired by Tom Brady, who famously retired at the age of 45, and he is ready to follow in those footsteps.

Football is a cutthroat sport. It’s not easy to survive in this business unless the player delivers positive results on a consistent basis.

Prescott has the backing of the Cowboys’ owner and general manager, Jerry Jones. If he did not, then the Pro Bowler wouldn’t be the highest-paid player in history, earning $60 million per year.

Dak’s contract runs through to the 2028 season, which means he still has four more years as the Cowboys starter. However, he wants to extend his career beyond that.

[The] forties would be a good number. Obviously, I’ve been through some injuries—played very physical in college. So, if I can get to 40 playing at the standard that I want, yeah, that’d be awesome.

Prescott missed a chunk of the 2024 season after undergoing surgery on his hamstring. With Prescott as the quarterback, the Cowboys were on course to qualify for the wildcard round, but the injury limited the Dallas franchise to just 7 wins, and they missed the playoffs.

As for 2025, it has been a mixed bag. Five weeks in, the Cowboys are 2-2-1 after playing out an overtime draw with the Green Bay Packers.

Despite the two losses, Prescott has thrown 139 completions from 195 attempts (71.3%) for 1356 yards, 10 passing touchdowns, and 3 interceptions. He is currently among the favorites for the league MVP title, as per Cowboys Wire.

Only consistency will help Dak Prescott play even in his 40s

Tom Brady managed to extend his career even into his forties because he was still relevant, and teams around the league wanted him to start under center. Therefore, that’s why he did not have a hard time finding a new club after leaving the New England Patriots. He won his seventh Super Bowl ring while playing for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Aaron Rodgers is on a similar path. Although his trophy cabinet only has one ring, teams still wanted Rodgers, just one year after tearing his ACL. Pittsburgh gave the four-time NFL MVP a contract, and he’s so far led them to a 3-1 record, completing 786 yards, 8 touchdowns, and 3 picks.

Players must still possess the desire, and hunger that Brady and Rodgers have to play for that long. Ex-Rams pass rusher Aaron Donald retired after winning a ring because the desire to continue just wasn’t there anymore.

However, the most important part of football is having fun.

I can see it more realistically now. And I think as much as anything, just the fun and the peace that this game still gives me, 10 years in, it’s going to be hard. You can’t supplement it. So as long as I can do this at a level that I’m proud and happy with, I’ll keep trying.

For now, Prescott’s sole focus should be on defeating the Carolina Panthers. According to BetMGM Sportsbook, the Cowboys are -170 favorites to beat the NFC South minnows.
