Last Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Nashville was a dramatic affair. Two times Cup champion Joey Logano secured the win after surviving five overtime re-start, using it to his advantage as he was racing P15 when the scheduled laps was supposed to end. It’s the greatest number of overtime attempts that has ever been made in the sport.

This prompted discussions over what is the acceptable limit for overtime restarts in the sport.  It was divisive topic as some wanted NASCAR to continue having unlimited re-starts while other saw it as just manipulating the race results. Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt Jr. has discussed the topic via his podcast and has given his verdict.

Junior pointed out that he has no issues with having multiple attempts and asserted that the five-overtime incident like at Nashville will never be regular occurrence. While sharing his opinion on red flagging the races, he pointed out that it should only be used if the caution period exceeds beyond three or five laps.

I am completely fine with unlimited attempts. These five overtime attempts isn’t happening every other week…If it’s a typical crash…it’s going to be three to five laps of caution then I wouldn’t throw the red flag. You don’t want to manipulate someone’s strategy.

Kyle Petty called out NASCAR driver for overtime drama

One of the most disappointing things about the overtime on Sunday was the fact that multiple drivers were involved in crashes that has cost team millions. Ex-racer Kyle Petty was really disappointed with the driver involving in such number of incidents and highlighted that they should have done better to avoid the incident.

These guys are trying to get everything they can on the restart. I completely understand but taking each other out, knocking each other out. These are the greatest drivers in the world and they can't run three laps, what is up with that? They've got to be better about this, you can't have that.

While as Junior said, it’s okay to have multiple overtime re-starts, it shouldn’t be the normal. The drivers should be more clinical in these situations and shouldn’t embarrass themselves by wrecking left and right.
