NASCAR over the years have raced in many different types of tracks, that includes concrete surfaces that was once Asphalt surfaces. Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt Jr. is one of the many that is really not a fan of such changes. Recently via his podcast he names two iconic tracks that lost its magic after repave.
Dover and Bristol are two tracks that have hosted some of the best races in the history of the sport. The tracks were repaved with concrete because the issues they have had with the Asphalt that was getting damaged every other race. Theses damages were to significant for the track authorities to ignore.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. hated these changes despite the fact that it was the need of the hour. Because of the changes made the track lost its magic and uniqueness, according to the JRM co-owner. The criticism from Dale Jr. came despite the fact that the two track have hosted some of the best races in the Next-Gen car era.
They did the same thing at Dover. Repaved Dover. Had a lot of problems with the track tearing up. Big holes, loose gravel, big problems, and they said, ‘You know what, screw it, we’ll concrete it.’ So I hated that. I hated that they took those two race tracks, that were super, incredible, magical race tracks, and put concrete down, and they’ve never been the same ever since.Dale Earnhardt Jr. said via Dale Jr. Download.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. claims Dover and Bristol has a bigger potential
Junior later pointed out that still he goes to tracks like Bristol and Dover with the hopes of seeing amazing races. But he feels still bit disappointed as he reckons the potential the track has with Asphalt is much better.
I know, I can go to Nashville, and I can go to Dover and I can go to Bristol and I can see an amazing race there today. We will. We’ll see great races at those race tracks. But I know where the potential is, as they were asphalt. I know how much we’re missing.Dale Earnhardt Jr. said.
Changing the surfaces of the two iconic tracks back to Asphalt doesn’t seem to the most suitable option now considering the risks involved. It would be interesting to see if NASCAR ever look into changing the surface.
