The legitimacy of the cup championship has been a huge point of discussion since the playoff format was introduced. One race, the season finale, determining the champion, unlike other motorsport series, is something many racers as well as fans over the years has found hard to digest. Now Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt Jr. shared his feelings about it.

Recently, Joe Gibbs Racing veteran Denny Hamlin via his podcast Actions Detrimental shared his thoughts on how this situation can be fixed. He pointed out that by removing the luck factor, the championship can be made legitimate again. To do that, the season finale should be a round of three races and the best racer from these events winning the Bill France Cup.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. sees this as a great way to improve the quality of the sport. But he does have reservations over which track will host these events. He doesn’t want any super speedways or road course events in this final round. Junior wants NASCAR to stay true to its root and host these events in short tracks or one and half mile tracks, indicating he wants three oval races.

I’m fine with Denny’s three-race idea. I don’t know that there’s a perfect three-race round for the championship, but I’d be hesitant to throw a Daytona or Talladega or Atlanta into it… I just think that stock cars and short tracks and oval tracks and mile-and-a-halfs and Darlington’s and all those, that’s NASCAR to me, so I would want it to be three ovals.

I wish we could figure out a new package for the Daytona and Talladega racetracks. I’d probably work on the rules that affect how the cars race at those two places: Daytona and Talladega.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. said.

Further talking about the point, Junior pointed out that the races at the two iconic Superspeedways isn’t as great as it used to be. He wants to make changes to the car that will make it easier for drivers to race together.

So, we go to the Daytona 500 and the cars, the way the race is sort of… it’s not as great as it used to be. It could be better than what it is today. I don’t know the answer to the specific, technical thing that needs to change, but I would love to be in the process of how we can make the cars do different than how they do there and how they race together.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. added.

The comments from Junior, who has been one of the best Super Speedway racers in the history of NASCAR, shows he is really passionate about the need of changes coming to the sport. It would be interesting to if the sanctioning body will respond to the Hall of Famer.
