The 2026 NASCAR Cup Season is going to mark the beginning of a new era, with the sport finally rectifying some of the mistakes that have been haunting them for years. It starts with the new championship format, as from this year the champion will be crowned under the original Chase format scraping the playoffs for good.

They are also planning to have more oval races, and Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt Jr. is excited about it. It was reported recently that from next season, the Charlotte Roval race won’t be part of the schedule, and the track will host races in its original oval configuration. This means there are no road course races in the last 10 races.

This got the attention of former Daytona 500 champion Dale Earnhardt Jr. and he as quick to share his thoughts on X. He highlighted that NASCAR is taking perfect advantage of the fact that Charlotte oval has been solid in terms of race products recently and he also asserted that the complaints about the chase not having road course races is pointless.

The Roval will always be there when they want to bring it back. The oval has been solid recently. No reason not to take advantage of that. One may complain about the lack of road courses in the chase. It makes zero difference to me either way.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. champion for big rule changes in NASCAR

On the same day, the Hall of Famer also made some bold comments on X calling for changes to some of the Next-Gen era rules in NASCAR. The first one is the number placements in the cars. With the current generation of car, it is mandated to have them in a non-centred position unlike in the past. Junior wants the teams to have the power to place the number where they find fitting instead.

Numbers! Put em where ya want! (Between the tires of course).

Another major change the JR Motorsports co-owner wants to see in the sport is associated with over-time restarts. At the time there is no limit to how many overtimes restart a race can have and it is making the sport more chaotic that ever.

With competition becoming more closer in the Next-Gen era, it has become hard to avoid multiple restarts to find the victor. Junior demands a change, as he wants juts one final restart to the race in the overtime. But he did admit that the fans would be furious if races end under caution.

Overtime. One attempt. I’d love to see it go but fans would be big mad when one ends under yellow.

The HOF seems to have good point with the overtime, but one might to less as the it’s not good look for the sport if multiple races end under the yellow. It would be interesting to see when the overtime rules changes will happen and how it is going change racing.
