Two-time NASCAR Xfinity Series champion Dale Earnhardt Jr. raced after a long break last week at Bristol. Driving the No:88 Chevy Camaro for his team, JR Motorsports, he had an impressive start that saw him lead over 47 laps before quickly parking his car on the pit road and bailing out. His car caught on fire, and the Hall of Famer had no option but to retire.

Dale Jr., while talking about his daughter’s perception of his racing career, pointed out that the eldest Isla was sad to see him not winning the race. He said that his daughters have no idea about his NASCAR career but added that Isla has an idea about his current racing ventures after seeing him race over the years.

Well, I don’t think they know much about my career, but Isla is 5; she just started kindergarten. So, she now realizes that when I go get in the car, and she’s watching the race, that I’m actually in the car out there on the track,” Earnhardt said on the Today Show (H&T: ProTalk).

For the first few years, we were taking her to the racetrack. (It was) her watching this one event, right? She’s like, ‘OK, I saw him getting in the car,’ but she couldn’t connect it. Me being out on the racetrack and competing, she didn’t really know what all that meant. But now she gets it. She was sad that we didn’t win the race,” Dale Jr. said.

The Bristol race was a roller coaster ride for Dale Jr. JRM

The Bristol race was a roller coaster ride for the entire JRM garage, as only one of the five cars they fielded finished the race. Justin Allgier, the only driver to finish the race, emerged as the winner while, along with Junior, the other three drivers were forced to retire. Josh Berry, Brandon Jones, and Sam Mayor took each other out during an early race incident. Allgier win might have helped the team cover the losses.

Dale Jr.’s car catching on fire was a huge miss for the team and the fans. If not for it, there might have been a multi-driver battle up front for the win.  If the vetran, still the most popular driver in the sport’s history, had been in the fight on the last laps, it would have been something to cherish for the fans.

He will have a shot at redemption this season itself, as he is scheduled to race in the season finale at Phoenix. It won’t be just about winning the race for him, as he will be more concentrated on seeing one of his drivers win the race and get the Xfinity title. Last year, they lost to Ty Gibbs despite having three cars in the final four races.
