Coming into Sunday’s Go Bowling at The Glen, Shane van Gisbergen was a man with a mission. He three things to redeem himself from, the poor run at the venue in 2024, Xfinity race loss of Saturday and pole loss to Ryan Blaney. He delivered exactly that by winning the race with a 11+ seconds lead over Joe Gibbs Racing’s Christopher Bell.
It also helped Shane van Gisbergen to secure a major milestone, he is now the rookie with the most wins ever in the sports history, defeating Tony Stewart and Jimmie Johnson. The championship winning duo had three wins compared to the four of SVG, all of them coming in road courses. This has inspired Hall of Famer Dale Jarrett make a bold claim.
On his race analysis for USA Network after the race, the former Cup Series champion Dale Jarrett asserted that there is no longer a debate, and the three times Supercars champion is the best road course racer the sport has ever seen. He seems to indicate the time has come to put aside the debates and admits the Kiwi is on another level.
Stop asking the question, ‘Is he the best road racer in NASCAR racing of all time?’ I don’t know how you can say he is not that.
Dale Jarrett said on the NASCAR post-race show on the USA Network.
Further talking about the same topic Jarrett highlighted how the Supercars champion isn’t winning races with small margin, instead he is properly dominating races, leading multiple laps and securing win with massive margin, like the 11 seconds lead at Watkins Glen. Even late caution, that usually kills the momentum of Cup regulars, doesn’t seem to affect him.
He is not just winning these races by a small margin; the only time it is a small margin is if you have a late caution, and then he pulls away to whatever he needs to do.

William Byron breaks down Shane van Gisbergen’s road course racing dominance
Hendrick Motorsports’ William Byron, who should have been one of the road course race winners this season if not for the Trackhouse driver. Ahead of the Glen race, he shared his thoughts on what makes the Kiwi special.

He admitted that for SVG, racing is road course feels like how everyone else in the Cup garage feels when they race in the ovals. The veteran, who is a Cup rookie, really understood the cars, the track and it makes him comfortable from lap one in the No:88 Chevy.
What I see with him is he looks like us on ovals. He’s just comfortable from lap one. He has a good understanding of what to achieve in his car.
William Byron said.
Further talking about the point, Byron pointed out that the Trackhouse driver is pretty smooth on the track, finding extra grip on corners where the rest of the Cup grid couldn’t match. He is also able delivered consistent speed every single lap, unlike the other driver who finds it hard to remain on the same pace the whole race.
He’s smooth, he’s not sliding the tire to make speed, so he’s not out there out of control. When he makes a good lap time, it’s repeatable, and he learns from it. He makes another good one.
William Byron added.
The comments from the HMS No:24 Chevy driver shows how much the Cup garage respects the Shane van Gisbergen and his solid performance on the road courses. It would be interesting to see if SVG will complete the winning sweep in the last non-oval race of the season that will be hosted during the playoffs.
