Since debuting on the main roster in 2021, Damian Priest had been a staple member of the Raw roster. This changed last night when SmackDown GM Nick Aldis welcomed Priest as the newest member of the blue brand amidst the ongoing transfer window. The 42-year-old shined on his first night as a SmackDown star, defeating Carmelo Hayes and solidifying his place on the roster.
Following his win, Priest spoke with Byron Saxton in a social media exclusive. The Archer of Infamy explained why this move was essential for his career. Priest claimed that he had achieved everything there was to on Monday Night Raw. As such, this was the right time to switch brands and face new challenges ahead.
This change of scenery was much needed for Priest, who had recently concluded his months-long rivalry with Finn Balor and The Judgment Day. After being kicked out of the faction, Priest had relentlessly pursued his former teammates. However, this admittedly stretched on for far too long as fans called for an end to this rivalry.
In addition to that, SmackDown has needed a main eventer like Priest. The blue brand has clearly been suffering from a lack of depth in its roster since extending to three hours. Hence, acquiring the World Heavyweight Champion could do wonders for the weekly Friday night show.
In 2024, the former Judgment Day member had arguably the best year of his WWE career so far. Damian Priest won the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania XL. Furthermore, the former Punishment Martinez gained a lot of popularity and respect during this period while facing top names like Drew McIntyre and Gunther.
Damian Priest teases major match on first night as SmackDown Superstar
Not only did Damian Priest emerge victorious on his first night as a SmackDown star, but he also had an intriguing interaction with Cody Rhodes backstage. The latter congratulated Priest on his move to the blue brand. After walking off, Priest said he would meet the Undisputed WWE Champion down the line.
Rhodes and Priest have competed against each other several times, especially in 2023. However, it was always The American Nightmare who got the better of his then-rival in their singles encounters. Despite that, a match between the two in the foreseeable future could be different than their previous clashes.

After all, Priest is now a former world champion, and without The Judgment Day, he has become one of the top stars on the roster. Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see when WWE pulls the trigger on this potential championship match.
