Gunther defeats Damian Priest at Survivor Series [via- @wrestlelamia/X]
The penultimate match of Survivor Series: WarGames was the World Heavyweight Title bout between Gunther and Damian Priest. For the first time, the champion entered a match doubting himself following his rare loss at Crown Jewel. Despite that, Gunther prevailed in a hard-hitting match as Finn Balor ensured that his former friend wouldn’t become champion again.
Priest gained the early upper hand over The Ring General, who looked surprised by the way things started. However, he began to smile after Priest hurt his shoulder while attempting a shoulder tackle. As such, Gunther targeted the injured area throughout the bout. Whenever Priest tried to come back in the bout, Gunther would work on his shoulder. The Archer of Infamy did manage to get some offense, only for the champion to subdue him.
Gunther hit Priest with the Powerbomb for a close near fall. In response, Damian Priest delivered a Hurricanrana-Razor’s Edge combination, which Gunther kicked out of. The latter continued his assault on the shoulder, locking in the Kimura. Moments later, the Austrian wrestler’s overconfidence got the better of him as Priest rallied during the closing stretch.

While the match was evenly poised, Finn Balor arrived to once again screw his former teammate. The Judgment Day member hit a Coup de Grace on the outside, allowing Gunther to deliver the Powerbomb and choke his opponent out. With that, Gunther successfully retained his World Heavyweight Championship and possibly regained his confidence, which he lost during the buildup to Survivor Series.
What is next for Gunther following his win at Survivor Series?
Now that Gunther has seemingly moved on from Damian Priest, fans are speculating what is next for him. The most popular name suggested by fans is CM Punk, who has been long rumored for a World Heavyweight Title feud with Gunther.
The Straight Edge Superstar emerged victorious in the main event Bloodline WarGames match at Survivor Series. More importantly, he has made a deal with Paul Heyman, who now owes him a favor. It wouldn’t be surprising if this involves pulling strings for Punk to get a match against Gunther.
During his own match, the World Heavyweight Champion also laid out Finn Balor after the latter interfered once again. Feeling embarrassed, Balor could seek revenge by targeting The Ring General. In fact, a triple-threat match involving Gunther, Balor, and Priest could be set in motion for the upcoming Saturday Night’s Main Event PLE.
