The New York Jets were close to going first in the AFC East when they fired Robert Saleh. Weeks later, the Jets are now last after losing 25-22 to the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium.

The Green and White headed into the 2024 season with a healthy Aaron Rodgers coming back from a season-ending injury last year. The four-time NFL MVP bolstered the hopes of a scarce franchise, whose last and only championship came in 1969.

The Jets had a glimmer of hope when the Jets showed some might and excellence in the midst of the season, even prompting NFL broadcaster Stephen A. Smith predicting at least a conference appearance for the dying team.

The Jets are 2-6 as the NFL closes in on the first half. Their season is almost over or Damien Woody thinks so at least. The two-time Super Bowl champion Woody lambasted the Jets, calling them worse than the last year. Speaking on Get Up, Woody called them just a roster.

The Aaron Rodgers era is over. It’s officially over with the New York Jets. This team is worse this year than Zach Wilson last year was playing the quarterback position… they’re just a roster, they’re not a team… it’s time to blow this thing up.

Damien Woody said

The majority of the panel agreed with Damien Woody’s comments, Mike Greenberg calling the game “one of the truly colossal failures in recent sports memory.” Dan Orlovsky thought that the Jets lost a game impossible to lose. Meanwhile, Rex Ryan is still hopeful. He suggested that the Jets can come back stronger as he expressed concern about the coaching and the offense.

Rodgers had a chance to revive the franchise image of the aging quarterback. Turning 41 this year, Rodgers now has to make peace with the reality of six losses through eight weeks. The 2-6 somewhat resembles the 2021 scoreline when an offense led by Zach Wilson had a 2-5 start in Week 8.

What are the chances of Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets making the playoffs?

SportsLine data scientist Stephen Oh gave the Jets just a 9.4% chance of making the playoffs, with a projected win total of 6.9. New York will need a significant turnaround in the coming two months to change their playoff outlook.

Three teams in the Super Bowl Era (the 1970 Cincinnati Bengals, the 2020 Washington Commanders and the 2022 Jacksonville Jaguars) have started the season 2-6 and made the postseason. In 2022, Jaguars went as far as being 4-8 before staging a comeback to reach the playoffs, becoming the second team to make the postseason after starting 4-8 after the 2008 San Diego Chargers.

The Jets are on the second-worst streak in the league, joined by the Carolina Panthers. They are heading back to the MetLife Stadium to host the Houston Texans. The Texans are fresh off a win against division rivals Indianapolis Colts on Sunday. There’s still a chance for Aaron Rodgers and the Jets to maybe prove that early results don’t give a clear picture of how the game goes.
