The Washington Commanders made headlines last season with impressive form and performance as they cruised to the NFC Championship game for the first time since 1991. The Commanders were one of the best teams in the conference after they finished second in the NFC East ahead of the Dallas Cowboys.

At the center stage of their success was the new franchise quarterback, Jayden Daniels, and a fresh new personnel base consisting of Dan Quinn and Kliff Kingsbury in key roles. Ahead of the 2025-26 NFL season, the Commanders are among the favorites to play the Super Bowl this season.

Two-time Super Bowl winner and former offensive guard-turned media personality, Damien Woody, recently shared his thoughts on the Commanders. Woody, speaking in a segment of the ESPN broadcast Get Up, focused on their bolstered offense and the stellar performance in his rookie season by Daniels as a reason for his arguments.

Super Bowl. When you have [Jayden Daniels] as the centerpiece, they’ve upgraded the offensive line, you trade for Deebo Samuel, it all adds up to the Washington Commanders being one of these teams in the NFC representing that conference.

Damien Woody’s statement might not be far-fetched. The addition of Deebo Samuel and Laremy Tunsil has strengthened their offense, while extending Terry McLaurin is no small win either. However, there are a few challenges for the Commanders. According to ESPN, the Commanders have the eighth-hardest schedule among the 32 teams.

Furthermore, the Commanders’ defense is not their strong suit. Similarly, their preseason games exposed that kicking also needs some serious improvement. Nevertheless, there’s no question that the Commanders are a team everyone will be looking forward to watch in the coming season.

Kicking might be the Washington Commanders’ fatal flaw this season

The kicking game could turn into a fatal flaw for the Washington Commanders because it undermines an otherwise championship-caliber roster, sans a weak defense. Last season, the team cycled through four kickers, who collectively went just 2-of-8 from 50 yards or more. Austin Seibert was utilized by the Commanders for the major part, however, they also employed Cade York, Zane Gonzalez, and Greg Joseph at one point.

The 2-of-8 from 50 yards or more was one of the worst records in last season by kickers. That weakness directly cost Washington in big moments, such as Austin Seibert’s missed extra point after a game-tying touchdown against Dallas Cowboys.

Now, despite investing a record one-year, $4.25 million fully guaranteed contract in Matt Gay, the Commanders are seeing the same troubling signs. Gay went just 3-of-9 from long distance with the Colts in 2024, and his preseason struggles, misses from 49 and 53 yards.

This suggested that the issue may persist. For a team with an explosive offense, the inability to finish drives with reliable long kicks puts added pressure on both the quarterback and the defense. Nevertheless, the preseason was more about the lack of attempts and practice chances rather than the struggles. However, walking in without the same is a risk they might have to take.

In tight playoff-type games, where a single field goal can swing momentum or decide the outcome, a shaky kicking situation can undo months of strong play. If they are to go the long way, Matt Gay is definitely going to be a big part of the whole equation.
