If Deshaun Watson can finally perform in the 2024 season, then fans might stop calling him the biggest trade bust in NFL history. Damien Woody, on the other hand, cautioned Cleveland Browns fans, because to him Watson in an orange shirt remains an unknown entity.
On Thursday’s segment of NFL Live on ESPN, Woody highlighted the last time Watson had a good season, he was still wearing a Houston Texans jersey.
We haven’t seen high-level football from Deshaun Watson since 2020. He is the biggest unknown player that we might have in the National Football League right now.
Damien Woody said about Deshaun Watson
The Browns took a gamble in 2022 and agreed to pay Watson more than $40 million a year. They also traded away several first-, second-, and fourth-round picks.

Since then, it has been an uphill battle for Watson, facing constant injury woes along with alleged s*xual assault allegations. In two seasons with the Browns, he only played a total of 12 games in between serving a ban.
2023 started promisingly for Watson with 5 wins from 6 games. However, a broken shoulder ended his campaign prematurely, forcing him to undergo surgery.
The Browns gave veteran Super Bowl winner Joe Flacco, the quarterback baton. Flacco made an instant impact, leading the team into the playoffs from a packed AFC North.
Woody added that compared to last season, 2024 will be much harder for the Browns. If they want to play in the post-season, then Deshaun Watson has to deliver.
The Browns will not have the luxury of calling on Flacco because he is now part of the Indianapolis Colts. They added former Saints quarterback Jameis Winston as Watson’s backup.
Jamies Winston revealed Deshaun Watson was the reason he joined the Browns
After spending four seasons as the backup to Drew Brees and then Derek Carr in New Orleans, Winston decided to link up with his old friend Watson in Cleveland. With the three-time Pro Bowler being the starter of the Browns squad, Winston is competing with Tyler Huntley for the No. 2 position.
It’s challenging to have a presence when you’re sitting back from afar watching, and he’s done an incredible job just staying locked in, staying focused.Jameis Winston said per Cleveland.com
He disclosed that Watson was the reason he wanted to sign with the Browns.
The opportunity was here for me to serve and to give to my teammates. And him [Deshaun Watson] being one of the best quarterbacks in this league, being a quarterback I have had to see him grow as a number one draft pick and just see his ascension as a player, I have familiarity with that. So, it’s an honor to serve him.Jameis Winston added
The Browns will play three pre-season friendlies with the Green Bay Packers, the Minnesota Vikings, and the Seattle Seahawks. They will open the 2024 regular-season account against the Dallas Cowboys at home with Tom Brady in the FOX booth making his broadcasting debut.
