“You can’t say s**t to him!” Dan Hurley ditched $70 million Lakers HC job due to reasons other than coaching
Dan Hurley would have found coaching the Los Angeles Lakers too tough a job for him amidst all the attention.
The hoopla surrounding the Los Angeles Lakers was not what Dan Hurley would have wanted to work with
Ahead of this season, the Los Angeles Lakers had two primary options to select from as their next head coach. Eventually, the franchise hired JJ Redick to lead the men in purple and gold. But prior to his signing, UConn head coach Dan Hurley was seemingly the front runner to take on the job.
Initially, the Los Angeles Lakers were thought to have offered a staggering $100 million to tempt Hurley. However, reports later revealed that the offer was just $70 million. That ended up being trolled as it looked like the franchise had low balled in trying to get the best college head coach into their building.
Later reports came out that Andrea Hurley, wife of Dan Hurley felt the offer was not enough for their family to uproot everything and move to Hollywood. But former NBA Insider for ESPN Adrian Wojnarowski, who had the major lead on this situation, revealed that Dan Hurley might have rejected the job for other reasons.
Adrian Wojnarowski went on to tell the panel of 7PM in Brooklyn that Dan Hurley is where he should be. The perils that come with coaching the Los Angeles Lakers would have been too much for him to effectively do his job as a coach.
Dan Hurley’s rejection led to JJ Redick hiring
The exact reasons for Dan Hurley rejecting the Los Angeles Lakers head coaching job is unknown. But after he rejected the offer, JJ Redick was the only remaining contender. As by that time, most of the other candidates had either signed with other teams or decided not to proceed with their participation in the process.
JJ Redick did not come with any prior coaching experience. But his knowledge of the game became evident on his podcast alongside LeBron James. That relationship also seemingly played a hand in the former Los Angeles Clippers star to become the current coach.
Redick managed to snag two experienced former head coaches and some quality assistants as he starts his career. Now after a promising start, the Los Angeles Lakers have hit some speed bumps. His coaching qualities will now come to the test as he tries to turn the team back to winning ways.
