Dan Hurley reveals LeBron James text message before rejecting $70 million Lakers coaching offer

LeBron James texted Dan Hurley during the Lakers offer

Dan Hurley is finally breaking the silence about the Los Angeles Lakers head coaching job offer. The UConn Men team’s coach has been in the news lately for getting an offer from the Lakers and then declining it. Amidst all this, the head coach himself did not speak about the topic, but now Hurley has revealed a story about the Lakers’ attempt to recruit him.

Considering LeBron James‘ tenure and experience, the star plays a significant role in the organization. On The Herd Show, Dan Hurley revealed that the superstar reached out to him as the Lakers made the offer. James texted Hurley over the weekend and had discussions regarding basketball and more. Further, James showed support to Hurley if he decided to accept the job and James was still on the team.

Letting me know. You know, that if he was there in LA that I'll have his support. Think about that, man. That blew my mind. Then we got into a text exchange and the text even went through when I chose to go in another direction.

Hurley hilariously added that he was shocked that someone like James texted him personally. The gesture was a classy move by James as his own future with the purple and gold is uncertain. James has a player option with the Lakers, which he may accept or decline by the end of this month.

However, James reaching out to Hurley may be an indication of his plans. Unfortunately, Hurley has declined the offer to stay with the UConn Huskies for the three-peat of the national championship. It will be interesting to see who the Lakers go to next with an offer.

Dan Hurley wanted to coach the ‘GOAT’ LeBron James

Denying the opportunity to be on the superstar list of the Lakers’ head coaches is certainly not an easy decision. As Hurley did not want to ‘abandon’ the Huskies, the head coach denied the Lakers’ $70 million offer. However, Hurley gave an honest answer after being asked about his rollercoaster journey over the past few days.

Hurley made a few media appearances in the last couple of days as he also was a guest on the Dan Le Batard Show. On the episode, Hurley stated that the head coach showed ‘serious interest’ in the Lakers during the ‘wild’ week of his life. Hurley wanted to coach James and Anthony Davis and be part of the incredible coaching history of the Lakers.

It was something I wanted to explore. The opportunity to coach the Lakers, and to coach one of the greatest players of all time. And coach one of the best players in the NBA and AD.

Hurley, accepting the job, would have added his name besides head coaching greats such as Pat Riley and Phil Jackson. However, Hurley has chosen the other side to stay at the college level. All the attention now will be on the Huskies’ next season as Hurley denied the Lakers offers.
