The Washington Commanders, 7-2 for the first time since 1996, are one of the strongest teams in the NFC. They have solidified their rewritten identity with high-profile wins against the Cincinnati Bengals and Chicago Bears.
Long-struggling without a solid center, the Commanders received manna in the draft in the form of Jayden Daniels. In addition to the rookie, the management had an overhaul as well. In the rebuild phase, the Commanders brought in Adam Peters (general manager), and Kliff Kingsbury (offensive coordinator) and replaced Ron Rivera with Dan Quinn at the highest coaching level. The complete knockdown could’ve gone extremely wrong, but the Commanders are staying atop the NFC East with seven wins.
The Commanders, who are considered for a deep playoff run, added another weapon to their artillery as the trade deadline closed in. The Washington-side strengthened their squad on Tuesday by acquiring cornerback Marshon Lattimore from the New Orleans Saints.
NFL Analyst Dan Orlovsky commented that the trade has made them a solid NFC East title contender. He mentioned that the management has carefully constructed the move to cover the flaws in the offense and add more character to it to aim for bigger things.
Marshon Lattimore, the 2017 AP Defensive Rookie of the Year, has battled recurring hamstring injuries that have fueled trade speculation for some time. Despite recording only two interceptions since 2021, Lattimore hasn’t allowed a touchdown in coverage over that period.

His arrival also provides Coach Dan Quinn and defensive coordinator Jeff Peters with added flexibility, particularly with Emmanuel Forbes. Forbes, a 2023 first-round young cornerback pick, has struggled and was benched multiple times this season, including last Sunday against the New York Giants.
The Commanders are all about the long-term vision, racking up draft picks
Washington Commanders, who have enjoyed an unpredictable rise this season, have their long-term vision set. In the recent trade, they traded their 2025 third-fourth-round picks along with a sixth-round pick they had obtained in a previous summer trade for defensive tackle John Ridgeway III. In return, Washington not only gained Lattimore but also received a 2025 fifth-round pick from the Saints.
The new management under Adam Peters is focused on developing players and creating a unit. Their offense, and even defense, to an extent, looks like a core with enough ammunition to exact damage and win. The new leadership has brought back the lost morale during the tenure of Ron Rivera‘s four-year coaching period.
Collectively, the Commanders still have seven draft picks in the coming draft. Amid three major trades, the Commanders have retained all three of their main picks in the first, second and third rounds. The Commanders have no room in the fourth and sixth rounds. They have one in the fifth-round while there are three open slots in seventh round.
