After a prolonged contract standoff, Terry McLaurin handed in his trade request to the Washington Commanders just about a week ago. The Commanders are currently not in favor of granting McLaurin permission to trade away.

The McLaurin-Commanders’ contract camaraderie has taken the center stage in the NFL offseason talks lately. The drama hasn’t made the Commanders anyone’s favorite, and not Dan Orlovsky’s for sure.

Orlovsky, a former quarterback turned critic, lashed out against the Commanders’ management for mishandling the contract. In an episode of First Take, the former QB argued that Terry McLaurin’s past performances should have been enough for the team to extend his contract.

Orlovsky claimed that McLaurin was one of the lone positives about the Washington Commanders for several seasons. He added that McLaurin’s absence would ultimately lead to the complete erasure of the success that they had in the last season. The Washington Commanders finished second in the NFC East and appeared in their first conference championship game in ages.

This has been one of the dumbest things around the NFL this offseason… Respectfully, Washington, you were a dumpster fire for years. You were a laughingstock. The only good thing about your organization was that young man… Give me receivers that impact winning as much, if not more than, Terry McLaurin. What are we doing in Washington? It makes no sense.

The situation, however, is not all black and white, like Orlovsky noted. McLaurin, at 29, might not have the same production rate towards the end of the contract; therefore, a $30 million contract extension might not fit right with the big picture plans of the NFC team.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are among the favorites to sign Terry McLaurin

The Pittsburgh Steelers appear to be exploring a potential move for Washington Commanders star wide receiver Terry McLaurin. After the Pro Bowler reportedly requested a trade, Steelers general manager Omar Khan has taken proactive steps, reaching out to Washington to understand the situation, according to Chris Halicke of DK Pittsburgh Sports.

The Steelers reached out to the Commanders about a trade for Terry McLaurin, but are not expected to land the star receiver.

There’s no question the Steelers need more stability and explosiveness at wide receiver opposite DK Metcalf. They could do with more firepower and building depth.

Calvin Austin III flashed promise but has just one season of meaningful production. Robert Woods, once a reliable veteran, has shown clear signs of decline. And second-year receiver Roman Wilson remains largely untested after logging just five snaps in his rookie campaign.

Terry McLaurin, on the other hand, offers the kind of consistency and playmaking ability the Steelers desperately need. The 28-year-old has eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark in five consecutive seasons, an impressive feat made even more remarkable given the revolving door of quarterbacks he’s played with in Washington.

However, the Steelers will have to match or pay McLaurin a higher amount than what they shelled out for DK Metcalf. Metcalf receives more than $32 million a year at an older age than the Commanders’ product. Nevertheless, considering Omar Khan has linked up with the Washington office, they might be willing to do so.

Pairing McLaurin with Metcalf would instantly give recently signed quarterback Aaron Rodgers a top-tier receiving duo. For the Steelers offense that underperformed last season despite big-name additions, the move would represent a strategic reset. As Rodgers prepares for a final push in the swansong of his career, the offensive partnership of Metcalf and McLaurin might just be their answer.
