Amidst a not-so-great offseason, Los Angeles Lakers fans have found some silver linings. Bronny James‘ Summer League performances gave them hope that he would impact the team, and Luka Doncic‘s signing an extension secures their future.
The franchise is gearing up for life without franchise stalwart LeBron James, and its offseason moves reflect that shift in stance. They have made roster moves with the intent of having flexibility down the line.
The expectation is that the Lakers would target a superstar once the 40-year-old retires. As their young core develops together, the hope is that the team will remain a title contender for years to come.
Many players showed up to support Doncic when he signed a 3-year, $165 million extension. But veteran sports analyst Dan Patrick decided to focus on those who were not present.
The one person who I thought should’ve been there was his son. Bronny James, if he wants to stay longer after LeBron leaves, like, that’s your teammate. That’s what was surprising. Bronny James should’ve been there. You’re the last guy on the roster. You should be there.
Dan Patrick said on the show
The 69-year-old went on to give LeBron James a pass, considering he FaceTimed Luka Doncic, and was justifiably on vacation. However, he believes the four-time NBA champion’s son does not have a surefire roster spot once his illustrious father retires.

That alone should have motivated Bronny James to be beside the one player who is taking over as the de facto focus of the Los Angeles Lakers. Patrick was trying to suggest that the 20-year-old has to show he is there for his teammates.
Fans slam Dan Patrick for singling out Bronny James
Basketball fans watching this episode of The Dan Patrick Show believe the veteran sportscaster was intentionally singling out Bronny James for clicks. Other valuable players, such as Austin Reaves, Jake LaRavia, and others, were missing.
But somehow, the analyst had to point fingers at Bronny James, knowing fully well that he was on vacation with his father after performing well at the Summer League. Fans felt this was intentional rage bait, as appearances at contract signings are not a necessity.
Moreover, Dan Patrick’s words felt as if he wants the USC star to prove his worth in ways other than what he produces on the court. Check out examples of those reactions below:
Good lord. Lol. Invented criticism.

So wait, players are expected to show up when another player signs a contract extension? That’s the weirdest thing I’ve ever heard

Ppl will find any reason to critic this kid :/
I wonder if Dan has cared about whether any other late draft pick goes to a press conference before bronny 🤔

Bronny needs to adopt the KD clap back template on these app & fight back .

When did Patrick become a grumpy old man?

It is possible that Bronny James was also on FaceTime alongside his father while congratulating Luka Doncic on his contract extension. It is also possible that the 20-year-old FaceTimed his teammate separately. But Patrick did not give him that leeway while criticizing his absence.
Bronny James should get increased minutes next season
Dan Patrick might believe Bronny James needs to do a lot more than just play well to secure a roster spot on the Los Angeles Lakers. However, the team needs athletes who can contribute effectively in their assigned roles.

At this season’s Summer League, the 20-year-old gave enough evidence that he can contribute on both ends of the floor. His confidence is much higher than what he had last season.
Along with his focus on improving his conditioning, he might have done enough to give the franchise a dimension that could help them give their star players extra rest during games.
All he has to do is continue being focused on the task at hand and not get bogged down by any disappointing situations. Consistent performances will go a long way in making him an important part of this team.
That will also raise his player profile and make him a wanted athlete, even if his father is not around to influence teams. This upcoming season is touted to be Bronny James’ breakout campaign.
