When Washington Commanders drafted Jayden Daniels using their second overall pick, it was highly anticipated that the rookie quarterback would start the 2024 season. However, now it appears head coach Dan Quinn isn’t yet ready to name the starting QB of the Commanders.

The LSU product has been competing against veteran quarterback Marcus Mariota for the starting quarterback position. However, neither of them has proved to be worthy for the starting position so Quinn has “no great declaration” for who would lead the offense in week 1 of the 2024 season.

Well, in true competition, that's why we set it up as we did to have Marcus have some [first-team reps] and Jayden to have some.
Dan Quinn told the reporters at the conclusion of the offseason program.

Earlier when rookie Daniels was asked who would be named the starting quarterback in week 1, he responded saying the decision is above him. As the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, Daniels was also asked whether he is getting the ‘star treatment’ in Washington.

But the quarterback quickly dismissed pursuing that notion further asserting he is not a star yet in the NFL and has a long way to go before earning that title.

Commanders’ HC Dan Quinn praises Jayden Daniels’ unbelievable progress

Even though Quinn hasn’t decided to give the starting quarterback position to the second-draft pick, this doesn’t mean he didn’t impress the head coach. Quinn spoke quite highly of the Daniels earlier in the offseason and that’s why he gave the rookie an opportunity to compete for the starting job.

There's no doubt that Jayden's making unbelievable progress here, and we'll have a really fun camp, but he's earned that opportunity to go compete.
Quinn said.

He also said that the team believes in Daniels to handle the responsibility of the starting quarterback. Additionally, the Commanders rookie and veteran wide receivers have also praised Daniels for his talent, since he arrived at the practice sessions.
