Former UFC champion Brandon Moreno continued his winning streak with a dominant victory over Steve Erceg in Mexico City’s Arena CDMX. The highly anticipated flyweight clash saw Moreno outstrike and outgrapple Erceg, securing a unanimous decision win in front of home fans. Following his victory, Moreno expressed his desire for a title shot and proposed an exciting idea for the UFC’s next big event.
Going into the fight, Erceg was confident and enjoyed the attention he was getting from the Mexican fans. However, that support was overwhelming for Moreno, who put out an incredible performance for the 20,000 Mexican fans. In a recent interview, the ‘Assassin Baby’ mentioned that he would like to fight for the title next at Noche UFC.
I really believe that every single time I step in that octagon. The people goes crazy, that’s a fact…that’s the goal. I mean it’s perfect for the UFC. If they want to have a pay-per-view, Noche UFC in September in Guadalajara, I think I’m the right choice.

While these losses raised a few questions, he always could come back, proving his resilience and determination inside the octagon. Last year’s UFC Noche was extremely successful, but it lacked a Mexican fighter in the main event, missing an opportunity to engage that audience. With Moreno, CEO Dana White has a chance to attract many passionate Mexican fans, further expanding the sport’s reach in that market.
Brandon Moreno was scared of the judges decision
At UFC Mexico, Brandon Moreno defeated Steve Erceg to win the fight convincingly. In the beginning, the former champion controlled the distance and used his boxing and leg kicks. The Australian fighter landed some counters, but Moreno’s pace and volume kept him ahead. The former champion also tried to mix it up by taking down Erceg and controlling him in the ground; overall his volume was better.

In the final round, Erceg pressed forward aggressively, but Moreno’s counter striking sealed the win. All three judges scored it 49-46, marking a triumphant homecoming for Moreno and positioning him for another title shot. Following the bout, the fighter shared his fear of leaving it to the judges.
I knew that the 3 round was close but I had the confidence that I won the other ones. But I don’t wanna be the guy (lead in points) cause you never know with the judges, it’s so dangerous. I don’t like to go to the judges.

Bad judges’ decisions are getting extremely common in the UFC, often sparking controversy and frustration among fighters after questionable scorecards. Many fighters have suffered unfair losses due to inconsistent judging criteria, leading to debates about the need for better officiating.
In fact, many believed Moreno did enough to defeat Pantoja at UFC 290. However, two judges gave the nod to the Brazilian, leading to a split decision loss for Moreno. The UFC continues facing criticism as judging errors affect rankings, title opportunities, which is exactly why Moreno was concerned.
Can UFC replicate the success of UFC Noche this time?
UFC Noche was a massive success, delivering thrilling fights and celebrating Mexican heritage in a spectacular event. Held in Las Vegas last year, it featured elite fighters, electrifying the crowd with high-paced action. Fans praised the UFC for embracing cultural significance, making it a memorable night.

Fighters delivered standout performances, earning performance bonuses and solidifying their reputations. The event’s atmosphere was electric, with passionate support from the audience. UFC Noche’s success demonstrated the sport’s global appeal and ensured it remains a staple for future celebrations of Mexican MMA.
While last year’s Sphere event was a great collaboration of sports and technology, it was a one and done event. However, this year, the expectations around the Noche card will definitely be massive. On top of that, Brandon Moreno has the opportunity to be part of it.
