‘Sterling wants the rematch, too…We’ll figure it out’ – Dana White on a rematch between Petr Yan and Aljamain Sterling
The first title fight in the stacked UFC 259 card between Petr Yan and Aljamain Sterling came to a controversial end. Just when Petr Yan was asserting his authority, well into the final rounds, he made a huge mistake by illegally kneeing Aljamain Sterling. It led to a disqualification and Yan eventually lost his bantamweight title. It became the first case of a title shift due to disqualification.
UFC President Dana White resonated the MMA community’s disappointment at the UFC 259 post-fight press conference. He expressed his displeasure that the fight which showed so much potential, had to end that way. However, he assured that the UFC will soon figure a way out to set up a rematch, since Sterling was willing too.
‘That was a fight that everybody was excited about’ – Dana White at the post-fight press conference
White was quoted as saying, “It sucked. It was a good fight. That was a fight that everybody was excited about. Everybody knew it was going to be good. That was a bad one.”
White then said, Sterling was up for a rematch as well, since he felt that he didn’t get the title the way he wanted to. Speaking of which White said, “Sterling wants the rematch, too. We’ll figure it out.”
Had Petr Yan not illegally kneed Aljamain Sterling, he could have gone on to successfully defend his bantamweight title, since he is claimed to have leading in the judges’ scorecards. Therefore, a rematch is something Petr Yan would definitely want, irrespective of Aljamain’s interest.
However, Aljamain Sterling is up for a rematch as well. So it is up to the UFC to make the rematch happen soon!
