Days after former bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt was granted a flyweight title shot against Deiveson Figueiredo, despite having never competed in flyweight division, Dana  White revealed the reason behind this matchup.

Cody will be surprisingly skipping all the top flyweight contenders when he will battle out with Figueiredo. He will be cutting his weight to 125lbs for the first time in his life. The duo will clash at UFC 255 on November 21.

While speaking with ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, the UFC president revealed the reason behind this matchup. He revealed the reason as to why Garbrandt was granted a flyweight title shot ahead of legitimate contenders such as Brandon Moreno, Alex Perez, and Askar Askarov who have fought and proved themselves worthy of competing for the title in the 125lbs division.

White says, “We loved it”

“Well he wanted to, he wanted to move down. He wanted to move down in weight and he wanted to take that opportunity and we loved it. So we did it. It will be a fun fight,” White said.

Though Garbrandt has no prior experience in this division, he surely is one of the most crafty boxers in the UFC. The battle against Figuerido will test his craft well. Besides that, both the fighters are known for their knockout power and it will be a tough fight for both.

Figuerido has earlier defeated the perennial contender Joseph Benavidez to capture the flyweight title. On the other hand, Cody Garbrandt has displayed a real KO power against Raphael Assuncao.

It is true that Cody Garbrandt was piited in by UFC in the flyweight division to cash in his popularity. But he is absolutely a real talent. He has the ability of causing a major upset on his flyweight debut.
