Last weekend, UFC CEO Dana White promoted his first-ever boxing event, headlined by Canelo Alvarez against Terence Crawford. White, a lifelong boxing fan, often criticized promoters, claiming the sport was dying due to corruption and constant mismatched fights. With TKO Boxing, White envisions a UFC-style structure aimed at restoring boxing’s credibility and increasing global entertainment appeal.

The project was made possible because of White’s collaboration with Saudi promoter Turki Alalshikh, who directly helped White financially. The event turned out huge and successfully garnered more than 41 million views on Netflix, making it an extraordinary streaming achievement. However, all of this success didn’t help White escape criticism, especially coming from his old rival promoter Oscar De La Hoya.

After this debacle, he decides to skip the undercard and shows up in the beginning of the main event and he’s just watching the UFC on his phone, the entire time. I wonder if he regrets abandoning the UFC for a sport that doesn’t want him. It’s like having a loyal girlfriend and ditching her for a hot one night stand, who ghosts you.

De La Hoya and White’s rivalry goes back many years, as both of them shared a friendship in the past. Since then, they have never squashed their long-standing beef, often mocking and criticizing each other openly across different public platforms. De La Hoya also highlighted White’s heated argument with a boxing reporter regarding TKO’s proposed revisions to the Muhammad Ali Act

So you’re saying this reporter’s an (expletive) because he’s asking a legitimate question? That’s because the Muhammad Ali Act protects fighters and TKO needs it to change so they can (expletive) fighters over.

Oscar De La Hoya continued.

De La Hoya didn’t shy away from criticizing Canelo Alvarez, his former fighter from Golden Boy Promotions, after their bitter falling-out. Their feud intensified after Alvarez accused De La Hoya of betrayal, while Oscar accused Alvarez of disloyalty.

The legendary fighter claimed Alvarez’s career was heavily overhyped, arguing that whenever he faced real challenges against dangerous opponents, he suffered defeats. He specifically highlighted the Mexican’s losses against Floyd Mayweather and Dmitry Bivol, and most recently his defeat against Terence Crawford.

Nevertheless, the criticism directed toward Dana White was much heavier, with fans demanding higher-quality packaging for the spectacle. Many viewers expected better from White, especially since he frequently criticized boxing events for their sluggish pacing and poor organization.

Boxing star refuses to give Dana White credit for Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford

The Alvarez vs. Crawford fight had been discussed for years, but Turki Alalshikh ultimately made it possible. He secured Alvarez by signing him to a lucrative four-fight multimillion-dollar contract, stopping negotiations with YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul. Reports soon circulated suggesting Dana White might not even promote the blockbuster bout, casting uncertainty on the event’s immediate future.

However, Alalshikh quickly intervened to shut down all rumors, firmly confirming White’s involvement and keeping the historic showdown firmly intact. Shakur Stevenson was at the boxing event and was impressed by everything that he saw. During a recent interview with Ariel Helwani, the boxer discredited the UFC CEO’s involvement in the whole process.

I don’t think I ever been to a boxing fight in the US that was like that. The arena was filled out, the fans were into it. I really don’t give Dana White that much credit on that event… Turki is the guy getting all these fights done. He’s changing the sport of boxing. You gotta give him his credit.

White’s involvement in boxing has also raised concerns from legends from his own sport if MMA. UFC veteran Matt Brown recently claimed that a UFC-type system will ruin boxing by monopolizing the sport. Many experts have also shared the same emotion, as UFC itself faces several fundamental problems, like fighters’ pay and contract transparency. As such, Dana White is not off to a great start at the moment.
