Daniel Cormier finds UFC star Conor McGregor’s sudden turn to politics strange: “People in Ireland don’t even like him…”
Fellow UFC two-division champ Daniel Cormier finds Conor McGregor's political aspirations a bit strange given his current rep.

Ex-UFC champ and superstar Conor McGregor has worn many hats and skins. ‘The Notorious’, the MMA mystic, Euro KO artist, Irish icon, party man, MMA promoter, brand whiskey connoisseur, and whatnot. McGregor has for long also taken a keen look into Irish politics. However, fellow UFC two-division champ Daniel Cormier thought his current bid at Irish presidency was just a bid odd.
Conor McGregor stalled a UFC or combat return recently, with news of Irish presidency. Soon, he also gave gloomy updates during the BKFC 70 Hollywood: Palomino vs. Davis Florida fight presser. The Irishman hasn’t been in a cage in a fighting capacity since his 2021 TKO leg break vs. Dustin Poirier. While a McGregor return remains far from the truth, Daniel Cormier feels so does his Irish political run.
The Conor McGregor of ’15, and ’17, and ’16, the one that went eight rounds with Floyd Mayweather, that Conor McGregor was in a rush to greatness, and if that’s gone, it’s over…But to be a politician – he wants to be a politician. Hell, I think people in Ireland don’t even like him. Everybody I speak to are like, ‘I can’t stand this dude.’ It’s a bit ridiculous.

McGregor wanted to dissolve or reform the Dáil Éireann (House of Representatives of the Oireachtas/AKA Irish Parliament) for not acclimating to Ireland’s working man. His zeal also saw a 21-home housing expansion for the Large-Scale Residential Development (LRD) application that is now 300+ units strong.
However, he is more popular stateside these days; he was on the NYSE trading floors with 42nd ex-POTUS Bill Clinton for the NYC Cops & Kids Boxing. McGregor is also developing quite the kinship with the current GOP administration, often reposting social snippets from JD Vance (his Munich speech) and Donald Trump.
Nevertheless, Daniel Cormier noted he was hardly Ireland’s white knight anymore. Even Irish locals as well as political body members, deny his hard stances on stuff. His crass comments on a Northern Irish divide also caught fire. Hence, the presidency seems a bit of a stretch.
Amid political talks, rival Dustin Poirier thinks Conor McGregor is just addicted to the limelight
If making stuff viral and larger-than-life was a person, it’d be Conor McGregor. Good or bad, he just trumps over all aspects in and outside of UFC/MMA to a large degree. Gate sales, PPV buys, nations rallying behind him, Irish supports, political claims- he has done all that. A reputation to be a bad boy inside and outside of fighting; McGregor has done that too.

These days, his life is a mix of happenstance. He’d launch his own records on Monday and get slapped with €248,000 in damages (£206,000 /$260,000 all-in) and legal waivers on Tuesday. Conor McGregor would gulp big beers at BKFC on Wednesday and still get rockstar treatment despite civil court appearances on Thursdays.
Everything goes on the way it does, but for a UFC return. It is something that even McGregor’s old foes pitched in on. Poirier, for one, was not keen to stretch a rivalry. To that end, though, he thought ‘Mystic Mac’ finds a snack in superstardom.
Nah, because if I fought him again it would just be for the money, …It felt so nice – I whipped him twice. It would be just for the money. I don’t know if he’s ever going to come back…I was his last two fights. That was years ago, and he still hasn’t fought. I just think he’s one of those guys who is addicted to the limelight. He just wants to be in the mix and in social media. Maybe he does come back, but I just think that he has an addiction to the light.

Daniel Cormier’s recent Good Guy / Bad Guy’ Podcast MMA show co-host Chael Sonnen has also pitched in on McGregor many times. He, too, recently billed that McGregor likes to hog the limelight a bit too much. As such, many have billed the Irishman’s political goals to be on the same stem.
