‘That fight…doesn’t really need to happen’ – Daniel Cormier believes Jon Jones would be too big for Israel Adesanya

Jon Jones and Israel Adesanya

Israel Adesanya was handed the first loss in his professional MMA career at UFC 259. He was beaten by a powerful and determined Jan Blachowicz via unanimous decision, despite making a bright start to the fight. With his light-heavyweight debut not going the way he would have wanted it to go, many were left wondering how Izzy would have fared if he had taken on his nemesis Jon Jones (the light-heavyweight GOAT, now a heavyweight).
Speaking about this in the recent episode of DC & Helwani MMA show, Daniel Cormier revealed that Jon Jones would just be too big for Adesanya to handle. He reasoned it saying that ‘The Last Stylebender’ clearly struggled against a heavier opponent in Jan, adding that Adesanya vs Jones needn’t happen.
‘Watching Israel Adesanya do what he did at middleweight…You think he can beat a Jones‘
Cormier was quoted as saying, “Watching Israel Adesanya do what he did at middleweight makes you believe he could go with anybody, and because of the skillset, you think he can beat a Jones. Today, after watching last Saturday, I believe Jones would be too big for him…That fight, for as much intrigue as there was, for me, it doesn’t really need to happen.“
It’s hard not to agree with DC. Adesanya was clearly out-grappled in the fourth and fifth round by Jan. The Pole had a ground-control time of more than five minutes, with Izzy clearly struggling to get back to his feet. But then, it could have been an off-day just like Adesanya mentioned in the post-fight interview, that it was just a bad day at the ‘office’.
