There’s renewed excitement at the New York Giants to see Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston, and Jaxson Dart in action during the preseason. Their acquisition was only possible after Daniel Jones left last year.

Jones signed a one-year contract with the Indianapolis Colts and made his debut for the AFC South club on Thursday (August 7) against the Baltimore Ravens in Baltimore.

Colts head coach Shane Steichen subbed Jones in after Anthony Richardson picked up an injury in the first drive. It was Jones’ first competitive outing of any sort since October 2024.

Jones lasted for a quarter and a half before Steichen replaced him with rookie Riley Leonard. Before leaving the field, Jones completed 10 of 21 passes for 144 yards (under 50% completion) and a quarterback rating of 76.77.

Giants fans react to Daniel Jones’ first start for the Colts

Despite the underwhelming stat line, Jones had his moments, and unsurprisingly, they came while he was on the move. On 2 and 7 in the second quarter, DJ hit wide receiver Ashton Dulin for a dime before the Ravens defense stopped the run.

DJ aimed a deep pass to Adonai Mitchell, but it was under thrown, and the second-year wideout took an awkward tumble on the turf.

Colts fans may be new to the party, but the Giants fans have watched countless missed throws from Jones during his seven years with the Big Apple franchise. They rejoiced to see that the 28-year-old was no longer part of the organization.

Jones chose to end his Giants contract after going on a six-game winless streak in 2024. The Minnesota Vikings signed him in November as they required an experienced backup to Sam Darnold because rookie JJ McCarthy was in rehab.

Even though the Vikings played in the wildcard round, Jones did not see any game time in the Twin City. He entered free agency after the Vikings did not extend his stay.

The Colts gave Daniel Jones a one-year, $14 million deal to compete with Anthony Richardson. However, Richardson’s injury has presented Jones with a great chance to assume the starting quarterback role.

Who will be the Giants’ starting quarterback in the preseason?

Even though Jones is no longer the Giants’ concern, head coach Brian Daboll still had a difficult job of choosing his starting quarterback for the new season. Daboll chose Russell Wilson for the week one fixture of the regular season, but the veteran will not see the field during the preseason.

Rookie Jaxson Dart will be the Giants’ starter against the Buffalo Bills.

Daboll will evaluate the performances of Dart, Winston, and Tommy DeVito to pick out Wilson’s backup for the 2025 season.
